Difference between moving a counter and placing a counter?
Asked by Baezil 11 years ago
If I move a counter from Simic Fluxmage to, say, a Fathom Mage , does Fathom Mage 's ability trigger, or is moving a counter to her not the same as placing a counter on her? Same question with Simic Fluxmage and Corpsejack Menace on the battlefield together--would the counter that moved from the fluxmage to, say, a Slitherhead be doubled? I'm thinking not, but I'm hoping I'm wrong.
To move a counter is to remove it from one creature and place onto another. Fathom Mage 's ability will trigger and you will draw a card. If Corpsejack Menace is on the battlefield you will double the counters, and draw two cards.
This link explains the rulings to moving counters with Simic Fluxmage (which in general applies to all movings of counters).

Does this work for planeswalkers? Like with Vorel of the Hull Clade ? It wouldn't work with Corpsejack Menace because it states +1/+1 counters, but Vorel's states "counters"

Nevermind, it won't work for planeswalkers, none of the aforementioned cards would affect planeswalkers, those are not +1/+1 counters, they are loyalty counters, very different

ShadowLand: Vorel of the Hull Clade doesn't mention planeswalkers in it's ability, and thus it can't target Planeswalkers.
He can however, essentially at least, double the amount of counters on a permanent of on a permanent of the type that his ability specifies.
The effect of Vorels ability will essentially double the counters on the target artifact, creature, or land. For example, if a creature has three +1/+1 counters and a divinity counter on it before the ability resolves, it will have six +1/+1 counters and two divinity counters on it after the ability resolves.
However a card like Doubling Season would cause the Planeswalker to enter with twice the number of counters on it, thus enabling a Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker to ultimate on the first turn he's in play.
Keep in mind that the Doubling Season wouldn't allow a planeswalker to gain double loyalty counters from using his +X abilities, as placing a loyalty counter on a planeswalker is a part of the cost, not the effect, which Doubling Season deals with.

Actually, Vorel of the Hull Clade would also work on Planeswalkers, so long as the Planeswalker is also a creature (Gideon, Champion of Justice , after 0 activation), or is also an Artifact (using Mycosynth Lattice ).... I can't think of a way to have a "Land Planeswalker" at the moment.

Rayenous: If you animted Gideon, Champion of Justice and then targeting an animated Inkmoth Nexus with a Mirrorweave , then you would get a Gideon who is currently an unanimated Inkmoth Nexus .
...Dunno why you'd do that though :p
You are correct in that an animated planeswalker would be targetable by Vorel of the Hull Clade . I could probably have been more clear, though I think it is obvious that since it says "target artifact, creature or land" it isn't dependent on whether or not the permanent is also a planeswalker.

Yes to both. Moving a counter to and placing a counter on a creature are the same. The Fathom Mage 's ability will trigger, and doubled counters will be placed on the Slitherhead
It's the same for "comes into play with X counters", the permanent comes into play then has counters placed on it, so a Savageborn Hydra will get doubled counters from Corpsejack Menace . If I'm not wrong it even works for Planeswalkers, so Doubling Season works for them, though I'm not 100% sure on this
