Crown of Doom interaction/ruling
Asked by PsychoticPranker 9 years ago
Quick question about a ruling situation for Crown of Doom from the Commander 2014 set, say someone goes into the attack step and attacks with a creature at the person whom is in control of Crown of Doom, then after the ability activates, the person who was controlling the crown passes the Crown of Doom onto someone else before the ability resolves, does the attacking creature still get the +2/+0 buff from the crown or does the ability fizzle out since the person now controlling the crown isn't being attacked?

Ya, I tried to link the card but it didn't work for some reason. And thanks for the info, I thought it worked like that but I didn't know if it was treated like an invalid target after the switch such as if you target a creature with Go for the Throat and then use Liquimetal Coating on the creature to make it an invalid target for Go for the Throat.

Edit: Allow me to clarify that the Crown of Doom won't trigger if you don't control it when they attack you. It will trigger when whomever currently controls it is attacked.

It's important to note that, while the +2/+0 is a buff, it's not a static buff like from Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite.
If the player attacking you has Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite under their control and you gain control of it somehow (Say Helm of Possession), your opponent's creatures will immediately lose their +2/+2 buff and gain a -2/-2 buff instead.

I'm a bit interested how someone is getting attacked on their own turn. The control changing ability on Crown of Doom says: "Target player other than Crown of Doom's owner gains control of it. Activate this ability only during your turn."

Well reason I asked is because I faced a Zedruu the Greathearted in commander and he tried passing it off to someone else after he got attacked because he forgot that I gave it to him.

Oh okay, yeah, in that case the ability has already triggered for each creature attacking him, so the triggers will resolve and the creatures will get pumped unless the triggers are countered or otherwise removed from the stack.

Ya, we ended up following that but we still weren't 100% certain. That's why I asked.

Gidgetimer, who follows the rules anyways? That's no fun.
As I always say to my playgroup whenever I'm asked why I didn't do something or not play a card: "No, I don't do that, that's too good."

Please remember to link all cards in your description. Crown of Doom.
The triggered ability from Crown of Doom triggers when a creature is declared as an attacker at you. The resolution of this trigger will give that creature +2/+0 until end of turn.
Once the Crown triggers, it's too late to bother switching control of it with another player. Abilities exist and resolve independently of their source, and the +2/+0 will stay on the creatures until the end of the turn regardless of who now controls the Crown.
Think of it this way, it's the same situation as if you cast Giant Growth on a creature. It's a temporary buff, but a buff that stays until end of turn.
