As Foretold's Peculiar Wording

As Foretold

In particular, the line "Once each turn, you may pay {0} rather than pay the mana cost for a spell you cast" is a little strange to me.

Are there edge cases where this is different from "Once each turn, you may cast a spell without paying its mana cost"?

Yes, it's different.

You can only cast a spell with As Fortold with converted mana cost X or less. So if there's 2 counters on As Fortold you could cast Grizzly Bears or Giant Growth but not Centaur Courser , since the Courser is CMC 3.

Also, if you wanted to cast a spell with X in its cost like Fireball , X would have to equal 0.

From the Comprehensive Rules:

"107.3b If a player is casting a spell that has an {X} in its mana cost, the value of X isn’t defined by the text of that spell, and an effect lets that player cast that spell while paying neither its mana cost nor an alternative cost that includes X, then the only legal choice for X is 0."

GreatSword I suppose I should elaborate. None of those examples answer my question.

How does

"Once each turn, you may pay {0} rather than pay the mana cost for a spell you cast with converted mana cost X or less, where X is the number of time counters on As Foretold."

differ from

"Once each turn, you may cast a spell with converted mana cost X or less without paying its mana cost, where X is the number of time counters on As Foretold."

Practically no, it doesn't have any difference. But as far as the game is concerned, it has to do with how you choose to cast a spell.

When you cast a spell, you may choose to (instead of casting it normally) pay an alternative cost. As Fortold lets you choose, once a turn, to pay 0 instead of the card's cost, where the counters on As Fortold are equal or less than the card's CMC.

From the Comprehensive Rules, in the steps of casting a spell:

601.2e The player determines the total cost of the spell. Usually this is just the mana cost. Some spells have additional or alternative costs. Some effects may increase or reduce the cost to pay, or may provide other alternative costs. Costs may include paying mana, tapping permanents, sacrificing permanents, discarding cards, and so on. The total cost is the mana cost or alternative cost (as determined in rule 601.2b), plus all additional costs and cost increases, and minus all cost reductions.

Also people who name decks the same as MTG cards are dicks.

So there's no reason to word it that way, when it's almost unanimously templated the other way? It's just weird because.

Lol, yeah. That's why I always tag with

[[card:As Foretold]]

As Foretold is not that odd - there are a whole lot of cards like it: Archive Trap , Bolas's Citadel , Rooftop Storm , etc.

They are replacement effects that allow you to cast for an alternate cost. This language is used on cards with a static effect, such as As Foretold, Rooftop Storm, etc.

“Without paying its mana cost” is used in different situations, such as part of the resolution of a spell or ability.

Also, GreatSword - you spelled As Foretold incorrectly, which is why it linked to the deck.
