Kalonian Hydra is a dumpster baby.

Kalonian Hydra This card is ridiculously powerful in the right deck. I remember it being quite expensive when it first came out, and now that it is reasonably priced, no one is playing it. If you're not holding a kill spell in your hand when that thing hits across the table, you go "Yipe!" Sooo did it get lost in all the theros squabble?
I agree with gufymike. I love Kalonian Hydra , but if you cast him in turn 5, and you cast a 4/4 Mistcutter Hydra on turn 5 (assuming no ramp), then you will still hit for roughly the same amount of damage by turn 6. Same with Arbor Colossus 's sheer size and Polukranos, World Eater 's utility.

I'm asking because I just looked at this deck and it looks like it could rip someone a new doodoo hole and be a load of fun at the same time. I know it's like ahhh you can't play simic and be competitive, but IDK, it looks cool to me.

I think the problem is it fights for a slot in the 5 drops, which most decks run at most 4 cards in.
Stormbreath Dragon , which is an evasive haste threat that protects itself, in the RG decks. And in the straight mono G it's up against Arbor Colossus which puts down a bigger body to start, monsterous makes it effectively as big and can remove a creature and more devotion to green.

I put together a new deck that runs Kalonian Hydra as the 5-drop in the deck. Yeah, it's vulnerable for a turn, but if it lives for that turn, I'm very likely winning the game. Turn 3 Polukranos, World Eater into turn 4 Kalonian Hydra into turn 5 Monstrosity on Polukranos so that, when I attack with both (or at least with the Kalonian Hydra ), both hydras get massively bigger. It's a threat that demands an immediate answer.

Kalonian Hydra is the boss of my deck.
I run 4x Scavenging Ooze Lotleth Troll and Desecration Demon so Kalonian Hydra comes out and literally doubles the size of my board.
My deck is simic ish as it deff is about +1/+1's pretty brutal. Rock/Midrange

Polukranos, World Eater and Mistcutter Hydra take his slot. Arbor Colossus also. That's why, no one says he's a bad card, just there are a bit better cards in his slot for the decks that would run him.
