Ash Zealot. Let's start off with the existing threats on the subject :

On Mtg Salvation and on Reddit

So as the title says I'm wondering about this card. I'm considering getting back to my initial love (mana symbol r BURN mana symbol r) so I casually browsed through my binder and found a playset of these Ash Zealot. I love the card overall for the CMC and stats it has.

First strike makes it a good blocker and haste makes it a good attacker but I just wanted to have the opinions of one more community to try and make up my mind on this.

Thanks lads!

does your metabolism play a lot of stuff from the grave? or are you looking at it strictly for the 2/2 haste first strike?

For the 2 CMC slot in the mainboard, Eidolon of the Great Revel is infinitely better. As a sideboard card it would be narrow, but great against decks that use Snapcaster Mage or utilize lots of Flashback spells. In that case, I'd rather see Grafdigger's Cage in a Burn sideboard as it can also hose Collected Company and Chord of Calling.

In summary, Ash Zealot is outclassed by better cards both main and side.

If you're running some sort of zoo-burn hybrid where the payoff card is Atarka's Command, then I could see its inclusion over something like Grafdigger's Cage. Haste is a great ability for aggressive decks, and the GY effect is just gravy on top. However if you're looking to build the most competitive zoo and burn lists available, the Zealot just misses the cut. It could be a good inclusion in a budget build if you're missing Eidolons though.

Well I don't have Eidolon atm but money's not that much of a problem when it comes to MTG :)

Besides, I've got tons of valuable cards to trade if needed.

I understand and agree that Eidolon of the Great Revel is better. Maybe use Ash Zealot as a replacement in the SB to deal with heavy aggro decks (first strike + burn spells or 2 Zealots make for a pretty good defense) and heavy control decks (haste + snap/souls hate)?

Once again I'm not sure if i'd rather have them or extra burn / RiP-Cage-andthelikes
