Thorn of Amethyst

Thalia, Guardian of Thraben

Which would you choose? What advantages and disadvantages do these cards have?

id say thorn cuz theres more creature removal then artifact removal. it kinda depends on the deck tho. in a human deck, thalia of course. in a control deck, thorn. i actually run a control deck with both of those and grand arbiter makng it hell for my opponent to cast ANYTHING

Thorn of Amethyst it can be played in non white and is less vulnerable to removal, also, isn't legendary

Thalia, Guardian of Thraben wins games with an awesome 2/1 firststriking body, and isn't affect by its own ability like thorn (though I still would not advise casting an additional thalia ;)

I'd run thalia if it were up to me.

Well, after the new legend rule drops, maybe.

treevore, Why would you run either in control, as the main reason you'd run them is to hose control?

Like all cards, it depends mostly of the meta and the rest of the deck. What deck do you plan to use those?

Why would you use Thalia, Guardian of Thraben in control?

Bobgalarneau

Use it as sideboard tech against Storm and decks that rely on free mana artifacts and cantrips in general in 12-post legacy.

When comparing the two, it depends on what format you are playing. Thalia is an amazing bear, she can block with first strike in the early game while helping to control the board. Now thorn of Amathyst is harder to remove typically, since creatures can be dealt with using wrath effects or other abilities that deal damage. If you are looking for a Legacy card, I would say Thalia, since she can speed up a clock and still protect you.

its more of an annoying control deck. just for casual stuff. its funny to see all 3 on the field and then the opponent pay 4 just to lightning bolt something. the grand arbiter pretty6 much nulls the effect of thorn and thalia for me, while giving an additional 1 mana cost to my opponent

Next time you reply to someone, it would cause less confusion to put the person's name you're responding to in double brackets. The same also applies for cards so people don't have to go look them up.

It really depends on the format. Thalia, Guardian of Thraben is much weaker in Modern than Thorn of Amethyst because of cards that see mainboard play, such as Lightning Helix or Dismember . People won't have a way of dealing with Thorn of Amethyst until game two.

In Vintage? Thalia, Guardian of Thraben is much stronger because it's a format where people expect to see Thorn of Amethyst , Sphere of Resistance , and Lodestone Golem in game one. Dealing with a creature is much harder.

Thalia is in standard, and it's also white, so in your gruul creatures only in modern with cards like Ruric Thar, the Unbowed , obviously you'd go for the one you can play, the same as naya in standard, you'd obviously go for the one in standard. As for which is actually better, thorn isn't legendary, but beware, your 2nd one costs 3 mana etc. If you want a 2/1 body first strike body, then you'd be more likely to go for thalia, but in less aggressive builds you'd be more likely to use the thorn.

What about in legacy?

@203995014: She's a little weaker in Legacy because people already have answers in place to deal with Dark Confidant , who has the same power/toughness. She's probably stronger in Standard than Legacy because of this.
