Good Fatpack to get...?

Now that I have a job again, I need to build my...nonexistent trade binder. I know, weird, but I think if I'm going to play a trading card game, I should get into this trading business. Plus, it's fun if you get some good value out of it. And I love being able to help my magic playing friends finish their decks/collections/etc.
So, is Dragon's Maze worth buying a fat pack of? Should I go with something else? Maybe buy a few packs of everything? Any suggestions? Obviously I play FNM too and will trade any decent winnings for things I want, but I never seem to get the good winning packs. On the flip, I have decent luck pulling actual packs. Quarterway decent.

They did?! Guess I'll check for those when I go up tomorrow. If not... guess one of the RTR Block sets it is. I'm going to doubt it though as well. If there is one... Hmmm, chance of pulling Lilly...
ahem Thanks for the input, MagnorCriol. Boyfriend and I pulled three booster boxes of RTR, so we have like three boxes of that, but gatecrash might be a good option, especially with it having quite a few very desirable shocks...

Doesn't Dragon's Maze also have Shocklands in the Gate slot sometimes? Unless you're going for certain Shocklands, I would pull from Dragon's Maze. Don't quote me though - haven't got any Dragon's Maze products yet.

I bought both a box and a fat pack of gatecrash and pulled 2 shock lands in the box and none in the fat pack. What that means for you idk but hopefully your luck is better than mine though im not complaining in the least better a couple than none.

To pulle a shock land or Maze's End in DGM is like less than 5% I would highly suggest ISD or AVR if you're capable of finding anything just because of the sheer amount of great stuff that is in there, Enemy Duals, Snappy, Lili, Cavern etc etc. If you can't I'd suggest Gatecrash as they do have the desired shocks and being a smaller set you have better chances at pulling good things.

My son had crazy luck with his DGM fat pack pulling Master of Cruelties , 2x Voice of Resurgence , and AEtherling which he promptly traded to me. Also, he did get a Watery Grave

Fat packs are, economically speaking, the worst way to buy packs. If anything, buy a booster box - they give you the highest pack-to-cost ratio. Even individual booster packs are better than fat packs.
Don't go for Dragon's Maze. There's very little good value in that set, and you have a 6% chance or so of pulling a shock at all. At least RTR and GTC had more playable cards.
Innistrad block is interesting; it will be rotating out soon, but there are plenty of high-value cards scattered around the block. Innistrad (the set) is probably the best for your money, but you're gambling against time in regards to value retention. Then again, the enemy check lands, Liliana of the Veil , and Snapcaster Mage are all very solid cards.

Consider buying a couple of DBTs too (Deck Builder Toolbox), you're guaranteed to pull a couple of rares out, and you get a load of card staples that everyone is always gonna want. Not necessarily gonna rocket the value of your collection, but it'll definitely add stability to it.

DBTs are not great, either. They're meant for new players with absolutely nothing in their collections; the cards are seldom good for anything but casual decks.

Personally I like Fat Packs I mean for 40$ you'll get 9 packs, a die, a couple of mini deck boxes, but mainly the storage box itself to store your cards. which is better quality than your cheap 1$ box from say walmart. I mean 35.91$ for 9 packs (plus taxes) compared to 40$ and some extras, it's not to bad of a deal really IMO But I always (if I have spare monies) pick up a booster box, it has the best value for your money, of course the best thing you can do is to just buy the singles you're looking for (usually the cheaper route)

You're essentially shorting yourself a pack to get some extra stuff that isn't really worth a whole lot in terms of monetary or physical value. Unless you need the box to store your cards, I do suggest going with loose packs (or a booster box).

I found an innistrad fat pack at a Walmart recently. If you can find one pick it up!

It's much cheaper to just buy the cards you want, unless you don't mind having bunches of useless commons/uncommons (or if you don't know what you want to play).

I ended up getting a Dragon's Maze fatpack, got a Skylasher, Sire of Insanity, two Render Silent, and little else. The world was trolling me with two, yes TWO, Emmara Tandris'. -.- Maybe I can trade em to a timmy. Happy with my sire though, he's gonna be fun in my Grixis EDH, and I got a new color of spindown dice. :D (I collect those too.) Oh, got a turn and burn too, already traded it away too.

Considering Dragon's Maze just came out, quite a few cards from it are going to hold some value for a little while which will give you some good trading power. Gatecrash is pretty sweet as well, I bought one recently and pulled a foil Gideon, Champion of Justice as well as 3 rare dual lands and a Master Biomancer.

@CastleSiege: I don't think that's an accurate analysis of Dragon's Maze. A lot of the rares are trash, and only a few will be heavily used in Standard. Currently, only about 23 mythics/rares are worth the MSRP of a booster pack, and only Voice of Resurgence , Blood Baron of Vizkopa , and perhaps a few others are really worth that value range.
I would estimate that there is perhaps a 2-week window to trade the chaff before it becomes so much dead cardboard in your binder. And I think that's optimistic.

I too picked up a fat pack merely because of my employee discount and i wanted/needed the box and I was curious about the spindown as well :p lol I managed a Voice of Resurgence I'm wondering if it will gain value or if I should sell/trade it before it starts to go into decline...

DGM booster box is the way to go. I drew a Ral, Voice of resurgence, blood baron, 2 blood witches, mirko,& tajic blade of the legion. I also drew 2 gaze of granite, 1 foil. I got a lot of valuable cards which I'm currently trading off for mainly shock lands.

I pulled a hollowed fountain from a Dragons Maze booster. Dragons Maze is more reliable

the thing is shock lands were never printed in dragon's maze...only in dissension, guildpact, ravnica, return to ravnica and gatecrash...never in DGM I would go for RTR or GTC

@ms: The shock lands were all included in DGM. The DGM packs replaced basic lands with either guildgates or shocks.
No offense, but if you're going to necro a topic, you should at least post accurate information.
November 19, 2013 6:11 p.m.
@epochalyptik Well apparently you haven't done your research. Notice that there are no shock lands.

Dragon's Maze has some immediate value, as being a new set there's cards that have inflated value because they're new and hyped or new and scarce (or both). I don't really know much personally about the long-term projections for its card values, though.
Picking up fat packs of RtR and Gatecrash has the added value of probably getting you shocklands, which are always going to be reasonable trade fodder. If there's an Innistrad fat pack available (unlikely), snag that, since the enemy-color tap lands in Innistrad are valuable, and Innistrad prices in general have risen since they recently stopped printing it.
