Incorporating Mana Dorks into the Mana Base?

Deck Help forum

So fellow deck builders I come to you with a question of when putting together and figuring out the mana base, how should one factor in cards like Birds of Paradise into the amount of lands and colors needed? To streamline the discussion, let's keep to 60 card formats. I first ask this in a general sense as for the benefit of all, and because my deck in question still isn't up here, but, for my sake, also when the curve tops out at cards Enduring Renewal, Diabolic Tutor, and Weird Harvest all while needing a splash of 4th single symbol color. My deck uses all of the above specific cards, and at times I feel I am getting flooded by both dorks and lands despite only 22 lands and 6 dorks. Thanks in advance. I'll try and get the whole list up shortly.

It really depends on where your curve ends up. If you're stopping at 8 or 9, you should probably have 23-24 lands along with a suite of 6-8 mana dudes.

Stopping at six should probably land you around 22-24 land and 4-8 mana dudes.

If you're only going to 4, you shouldn't need more than 4 mana dudes and 22-24 land unless you're really pushing to get a 2 drop on turn 1 or whatever. Back when pod was a thing, it wanted the Birthing Pod out asap, so it jammed up to 8 dorks to get that to the turn two pod reliably.

In my modern shenanigans I cap at 4, with one set being XGG which never goes past 4 so it fits in. So to help fix for sake of 4 colors and since white is so necessary with renewal being my major win-con, I have 22 lands mostly half white, 4 birds, and 2 Avacyn's Pilgrim. So that's where I ask do I risk dropping a land of some sort (to be determined and which one is down to fixing purposes) to fit in extra win con sight, or play it safe with higher risk of flooding out?

My general rule is to count mana dorks as color sources that they can generate and every playset is roughly worth a land. The though point of mana dorks is that you want to jump the curve, so often aggressively cutting into your lands is counter-productive and leave you even more vulnerable if they interact with your mana dorks.

4 mana dorks is roughly worth a land. That's how I do it.

Sweet guys, thanks! I'm trying to see if I can cheat the mana a bit and a touch more threat density. Once finals are over I'll get my possible GP Charlotte list up that is referenced here and see what can be made of it.

so mana dorks i ussually count them as lands but i take the total number and divide by 2. so 8 mana dorks is worth 4 lands. So run 20 or 18 lands and then run 8 mana dorks i suggest running Utopia Sprawl ,Birds of Paradise, or Noble Hierarch. Then run fetches to help ensure your color variety and thin you deck. so you don't get flooded in draws.

the counting a play set as one land is a bit extreme.

I'll be down to 21 lands as it stands and needing to hit 4 colors with double symbol in 3 of them; add on 4 Birds and 2 more, leaving 27 total. This whole mana base thing is really confusing. All this will hopefully be more clear once I get the list up, but also trying to make a general sense.
