I don't think this deck is horrible, but it needs improvement. Any suggestions?

The deck is a merfolk tribal control deck.

Some initial thoughts:

  • too many cards are 1-ofs and 2-ofs, which is going to lead to massive consistency issues. Most the deck should be playsets (4-ofs) of cards.

  • your mana curve looks waaay too high. I know in Modern its often unrealistic to run more than 3-4 cards costing 4 mana, and often nothing higher-costing than this. I imagine Legacy is even more intense on mana efficiency, but you’ve got a whopping 11 cards costing 4-or-more mana. This seems waaay too much and will lead to very slow/clumsy hands.

  • i’m curious as to why you’ve built this for Legacy and not Modern? Modern can support Merfolk as a tribe quite nicely, but I don’t see how this tribe can get close to competing against the decks in Legacy…

Thanks for the feedback!

I built this for legacy as I am a relatively new player and that is just what me and my friends play.

About the mana curve, what do I do to fix that asside from taking cards out?

trueblue102231 the mana curve solution really is to just take cards out - i’d suggest ditching everything above 4 mana, and then restricting your quantity of 4-mana cards to 3-4. Depending how the rest of your curve looks, you might be able to go down to 23 lands.

The only way a deck can justify running lots of high mana cards is with a bunch of ramp spell… bit that is a very different deck to what you have here.

Does your group allow proxies? Legacy is very unforgiving of suboptimal decks, considering the quality of cards that are legal.

Legacy Merfolk is definitely a thing. Though "I am a relatively new player and that is just what me and my friends play" leads me to believe that maybe the deck is Legacy legal, not competitive Legacy. I might be wrong, but I don't think this is a case of "go spend $700 on playsets of Force of Wills and Chalice of the Voids". You could take a cue from the legacy list and run playsets of True-Name Nemesis, Lord of Atlantis, and Master of the Pearl Trident as a basis for the deck though.

Just to confirm a few things, yes, I don't want to spend $700 on a deck at the moment, however, I am willing to put in about $50-$100 Second, me and my friends allow any card ever printed because we don't really have the money to restrict our pool.
