A turn 6 win! —June 18, 2013
Just playtested and won during my upkeep on turn 6!!
I played out two overgrown battlements and 2 Axebane Guardian and taped for 20 mana on turn 5 to play a 19/19 Protean Hydra!! I had Mayael's Aria on the field and my 20/20 won the game on turn 6! Lol that is best case scenario right there.
T1: Forest T2: Forest + overgrown battlement T3: Mountain + axebane guardian T4: Mountain + overgrown battlement + axebane guardian + Mayael's aria T5: Tap all my lands and defenders for 20 mana and play a 19/19 protean hydra. T6: WIN
i thought about wall of blossoms, but wasnt sure if i wanted a free card or a tapable mana source every turn. i dont know about axebane. hes a little too expensive i think. i need more one and two drop creatures, and im not sure how many walls i will have in my deck.
thank you for pointing out overgrown battlement though, that is a straight up improvement over vine trellis. ill make the switch there.

To combo with your the Protean Hydra you could give Spidersilk Armor a try, it makes the hydra immune to damage. Another possibility for protection is Canopy Cover , I never tried it in my deck.
I do love hydra decks, so +1 from me.

Wall of Blossoms gives you a card and blocks, or you could try Overgrown Battlement and Axebane Guardian to ramp and defend.
