Top 8 - PPTQ Madison, WI —June 7, 2015
Latest version of D&T made top 8 at this weekend's PPTQ. Went 6-0 through swiss, then lost to burn in the first knockout round. I didn't have my notebook, so I didn't take any notes to remember certain plays or matchups. I'm pretty sure I boarded in all of my sb cards (even if I didn't draw all of them) and overall I felt very good about the deck. There were no matchups where I felt I had no chance. What I remember is below.
Rd 1 - soul sister combo - deck was described as 33% soul sisters, 66% personalized combo. i hate the soul sisters matchup, so i think it worked well for me that it was a brew deck. he also drew a lot of lands.
Rd 2 - Affinity - lost g1, won my sideboarded games off of kataki. i had my best play of the tourney in g3. instead of dropping a t2 kataki, i played a tapland t2. his t3 he cast an etched champion onto a board with an arcbound ravager. with the champion on the stack, i path'd his ravager and he sacced most of his lands to pump the ravager and then move the counters over to his signal pest. t3 i dropped kataki and it was difficult for him to advance his board from there. the main reason i didn't play kataki t2 was because he had an untapped mox opal, and i didn't want to drop it into an eot galvanic blast.
Rd 3 - collected company combo - the only deck where i felt worried about the matchup. i won g1 and was able to stay alive long enough to draw g2. i think i need to find some more cards to fight this matchup if it's going to be more popular, but i'm not sure what.
Rd 4 - amulet bloom - my favorite matchup! i hope this deck continues to be popular, because it is just so weak to a deck full of ld and taxing effects like arbiter and thalia. i did lose one game, so i can't be overconfident.
Rd 5 - RUG delver - g1 he kept a 1-lander and played t1 delver. t2 i think he drew a creature and serum visionsed a spell to the top. i played thalia on t2, and he didnt' draw more lands to keep casting spells until it was too late.
Rd 6 - burn - he mulled to 4 g1 and then i drew firewalkers g2.
lost to burn in the top 8. missed some lifegain triggers in one game and ended 2 of the 3 games with only 2 lands in play.
my luck finally ran out, but i won 24 packs for $25 and cracked some nice stuff so i can't complain. modern continues to be a fun format for me, and the deck is performing reasonably well against a variety of archetypes.
Ryotenchi thanks for the comment.
i was playing more of a hatebears build last year at the GP and i liked it a lot. then i played against a d&t build that played the splicers and Flickerwisp and i fell in love. vialing in a flickerwisp is my favorite thing to do, it can cause so much disruption and is a good clock on offense as well.
from what i've read, d&t uses vials and flickerwisps, and hatebears doesn't. obviously there's some room to blur those lines though, and the whole archetype is a blast to play. best of luck on your build!

Actually Hatebears does. Specifically dropping Leonin Arbiter in response to a search or Aven Mindcensor if Im tapped out. On top of just tempo'ing out my board!
Budget hatebears tend not to run vials.. I personally wouldnt give them up... o.o Seriously.. My curve is 3 drop heavy, so top decking a 4 drop that could win me games necessitates them vials. (Also helps that people thing my whole deck is 2cmc.. so.. they can misplay or board in silly Spell Pierces..
The reason I dont play this build your on, was I didnt want to deal with Torpor Orb but I also wanted to be able to board in Hushwing Gryff. :3 (Additional answers to exarch twin, amulet combos titan, soul sisters.. Ect.)
Outside of orb though.. You've def got the superior build. Mines gotta be slower I'm certain.
Ryotenchi says... #1
Interesting. Def on the other bear strategy :3
Your version I feel can benefit a ton more than what the Hatebear Primer peeps are trying to do with theirs. Im gonna +1 just for that part.
Dropping 2 Blade Splicer off a Collected Company specifically.. Sounds epic. 4 bodies for 1 spell.
(Does drive me bat shit when peeps suggest Collected Company for my build though.. Id have to completely change decks for what they have in mind..)
