Caley's Thoughts
In round 2, we picked up a number of good red cards; we now have a full set of Burst Lightning, a good deal of other removal and tricks, and a solid complement of dudes. In the next round we need to make a decision as to whether to go mono-red, or to try and flesh our our thus-far limited selection of blue cards.
Our cards so far

Well it's either the Vizzerdrix or the Walking Atlas for me.
If we have a tsunami out then we can continue to play lands... to eventually have enough to get the Goliath Sphinx .
An atlas might come up again, the sphinx won't.
I vote Goliath Sphinx

Afraid I won't be able to do the next pack until tomorrow. Our fellow drafters are unavailable until then.

Goliath Sphinx , although I was tempted by the atlas... really the bomb will need a support card like the Walking Atlas to get into play after the tsunamis but the atlas is at common and the sphinx is rater... large.

You sure? We may wanna deny some ally player the Halimar Excavator . How likely is it that Goliath Sphinx will come back around?
April 20, 2010 8:16 a.m.
I'd be taking out the Explore . Don't wanna pass those green bad boys any more stuff. Besides, Goliath will come baaack.
April 20, 2010 8:36 a.m.
well after we drop the tsunami we arent going to play anymore lands, the number we have will remain the same.
So getting enough mana could be tough. But i do like good old walkin' atlas
But i think im gonna have to change my mind and go with the halimar-escavator
AT WORST its a 1/3 for 2 we can stall behind for a turn or two that mills a card.

Tough pick. Goliath Sphinx is what I'd choose, but there are good arguments that can be made for Halimar Excavator . Our deck ends up being too aggro to consider mill though, I think.

We have enough removal that we can get into the late game, and Goliath Sphinx is quite the fatty.
April 20, 2010 12:08 p.m.
Oh also the other point about Goliath Sphinx not interacting well with Living Tsunami is true but if our Tsunami is alive we are probably winning anyways, not a huge need for an 8/7 flyer after that.

Hmm... 7cc with 2 Living Salamis in the deck and no acceleration or tutors? We could use a heavy hitter, but I don't think Goliath Sphinx belongs here. A fatty in red would be a better choice.
I am tempted by Walking Atlas . But, in the absence of a truly strong card for us, I think Halimar Excavator is the best combination of hate and utility. Play him early and someone might mistake us for the guy grabbing all the allies.

halimar-extractor is SCARY in an ally deck, and Walking Atlas would be super helpful... but Goliath Sphinx is the buh buh bomb, baby, and we want it bad. I'm pretty sure we've hate-drafted (Journey to Nowhere ) the only thing that could take it out if we've got it in play.
April 20, 2010 12:44 p.m.
I'm not sure why people want the Goliath Sphinx . That card will never get out on either side, if it does we bounce it for stall. The Halimar Excavator is a maybe because of hate and we could play it, not very effectively, but we could. The Walking Atlas would help with the geopede, flash dropping Teetering Peaks , and counteract the Living Tsunami . I say go with that.
April 20, 2010 2:45 p.m.
I'm really all about the Walking Atlas because of Living Tsunami and I really don't see why we would choose a bomb or hate over deck synergy.

I liked the 1/3 Halimar Excavator since it is a cheap blocker who can buy us some time, but there are 2 things that win games... mana accelerators and bombs which means that the excavator is strictly a no go.
I admit it is unlikely that we are going to be able to play the awesome bomb card with out some deck acceleration. I am really torn... either the Walking Atlas or the Goliath Sphinx could win the game for us, but in very different ways.
I tend to doubt either of them will make it back around to us, as some one will hate draft the sphinx and everyone can use mana accelerators. That being said, we don't have any real huge bombs, that are both powerful and tough. Our deck contains mostly lopsided creatures who have higher power than toughness which means they get taken out by chump blockers....so i think i have to go with the bomb... even though I really like the mana accelerator.
Goliath Sphinx is the pick.
If we were drafting ROE, then this pick might be the mana accelerator.

The drawback with the Walking Atlas is as we move later into the game we have less and less need of the card. It is a great early game advantage but completely looses its effectiveness unless we have the tsunamis out. On the other hand the Sphinx gets better and better as the turns go on.

The Excavator has some good arguments for it, and the Atlas to somewhat, but I think Sphinx Big-Butt's potential for finisher/bombiness is high, and important for us.
Atlas and Excavator are both commons; it seems like a decent chance we might see another one or even two of them as the packs go by, not to mention other acceleration cards.
We only get this first pack, probably, to choose a bomb; they'll start getting weeded out after this. (Admittedly there's a higher chance of bombs by the time we're doing the WWK pack since everyone's now color-bound but still.) Go with the bomb now and take your supporting cast from the other packs.

Think the pick has to be Goliath Sphinx .
