When do i chose which creature progenitor mimic becomes a copy of?

Asked by Cookie_Monster 6 years ago

So, i play a Progenitor Mimic and try to copy one of my Kiora's Follower, but my opponent then receives priority and kills it with a Shock , dose my Progenitor Mimic become a 0/0 automatically or can i change it to another creature when the card resolvesSo, i guess i'm asking when i choose which card i want it to copy, when Progenitor Mimic is put on the stack, or when the card resolves?

You have to choose what you copy only as the Mimic is entering the battlefield. No one has priority to respond during that.

The opponent has to react in response to the spell being cast. If he/she does, you can simply choose something else to copy when it resolves.

You don't get to choose a card to copy until the moment Progenitor Mimic hits the battlefield. The moment it hits the battlefield, it is too late for your opponent to interact with what you are copying.

This is what you should do:

I cast Progenitor Mimic: responses?

If opp says "Response: Shock your Kiora's Follower"

You say "okay, I'll copy some creature on the battlefield"

If opp says "no response", you say "okay I'll copy Kiora's Follower, and its too late to stop me"

Note on tournament policy and shortcuts. When you cast Progenitor Mimic, if you say something along the lines of "Copying Kiora's Follower" you are locked into that choice if your opponent doesn't respond. If your opponent chooses to respond, even if they don't invalidate your choice (such as by cracking a fetch), you can change it. You aren't required to choose when casting though, this is just official policy on if you do.

Neotrup does that apply to all future statements? For example, if I were to crack a Polluted Delta and say "I'm gonna search a basic" does that mean I have to search a basic land if the opponent doesn't respond?

Yes.

If a player casts a spell or activates an ability and announces choices for it that are not normally made until resolution, the player must adhere to those choices unless an opponent responds to that spell or ability. If an opponent inquires about choices made during resolution, that player is assumed to be passing priority and allowing that spell or ability to resolve.
