Seven Dwarves in Limited

Asked by Boza 4 years ago

There is a newly spoiled card from TED called Seven Dwarves, which has the text "A deck can have up to seven cards named Seven Dwarves."

Does this mean if I open at prerelease 8 copies of them (or more realistically, draft 8 copies), I cannot play all 8 copies?

You should be able to play all of them.

Limited format events do not restrict players to the normal rule of only having up to four copies of a given card in their decks, which incidentally obviates the need for previous rules text that altered deckbuilding in this way.

So far the only cards that have exceptions to the "four-of" rule are Persistent Petitioners , Rat Colony , Relentless Rats , and Shadowborn Apostle , all of which say that a deck can have any number of that particular card.

This is the first time we've seen rules expanding the number past four without removing the restriction entirely, but it's safe to assume that it functions similarly to deckbuilding with a limit of four of each card, and thus is ignored in Limited.

Just stumbled upon this. It appears you'll only be allowed seven copies of Seven Dwarves, even in Limited.

Well then, there you go. Official ruling. Cap is seven no matter what format you're deckbuilding for.

I hate it when they change how the rules function because of a single card. That is so dumb.

Thank you for your help! It feels weird, but hey, it is what it is.

I know this has been answered already, but I did want to take a second to respond to Gidgetimer's point.

I do not see this as changing the rules for a particular card, in fact, I'd suggest that, were the ruling you could have as many dwarves as you pulled in limited, that would run afoul of Rule 101.1's stating the card's text takes precedence over the rules (in this case Rule 100.2b's "may contain as many duplicates" language).

Caerwyn Ok, you convinced me on this point and made me less irate about specifically it. I still hate it when they change how the rules work for a single card as they have on at least two occasions in the last 4 years. Maybe more.
