Rite of replication + tishana

Asked by Firefang01 6 years ago

If I have Tishana, Voice of Thunder out and then cast Rite of Replication kicked would I be doing the draw trigger of at least 30 cards before state based actions are checked on legendary rule?

No, the legend rule would resolve prior to drawing the cards.

Yes you do draw, at least it works that way on magic online. Actually copying Tishana is one of my favorite ways to draw cards from her. The ETB goes on the stack and then you have to choose a copy of tishana to keep before the etb resolves. After you choose one, the etb resolves even if its not the one you kept.

The ETB trigger doesn't count both Tishanas toward the creature total though, since only one is left in play by the time the ETB trigger from the copy resolves.

Doesn't a kicked Rite of Replication on Reaper King destroy like 25 permanents?

I always thought the creatures all "see each other" when they etb; then the legend rule kicks in and all but one implodes

When Rite of Replication resolves, it creates 5 Tishana, Voice of Thunders. Immediately, State-based actions are checked, and five Tishana's need to be moved to the graveyard. Then five triggers to draw cards equal to the number of creatures you control are put on the stack. Since you only have one Tishana left, you draw a total of five cards.

This is the same thing as with Reaper King - however, Reaper King doesn't care if scarecrows STAY in play, he only cares that they touch the battlefield. Therefore, kicking Rite on the King DOES destroy a bunch (30, to be precise, since 6 Kings see 5 Kings ETB) of permanents.

Tishana's draw trigger counts the number of creatures on resolution, so you will get all the draw triggers, but only one Tishana will be counted for how many cards to draw. Likewise, if you cast her normally and someone Routs in response to the draw trigger, you will draw 0 cards.

It's usually not relevant for Reaper King that the copies are gone by the time the triggers go on the stack, but since his ability is not optional (you MUST destroy a permanent), it actually does matter sometimes - if your opponents have fewer than 30 permanents, you have to target your own, and since the copies are all gone before the abilities go on the stack, you cannot target the copies you don't intend to keep.

Well that's how it works on magic online. Maybe Tishanas ability checks how many creatures are present upon resolution of the ability and RK at the beginning because it targets? Not sure.

Tishana is more complicated than I thought lol

Original Reaper King would see five etb, the five tokens would see four others etb

5 + (5 x 4) = 25

PhotogenicParasympathetic, since all the triggers go on the stack at t he same time, there is nothing preventing you from targeting the same permanent with multiple triggers. It just means that when any triggers targeting any single permanent after the first resolves are countered.
