“”responding”” to sacrifice

Asked by Summit 3 years ago

Here’s the deets:

I have a Sisay, Weatherlight Captain commander deck that I like to play reactively - she can essentially flash in any legendary from my deck that I need for 5 mana.

My roommate runs a sac-heavy Muldrotha, the Gravetide deck. In this instance I have been thinking about her new inclusion of Greater Good.

I know I can’t respond to sac specifically but can I respond to the triggered effect while it’s on the stack? Specially - I would like to drop in Nekusar, the Mindrazer in response to her drawing a card/before she draws a card, to sneak some damage in. Alternatively, how about Syr Konrad, the Grim?

Is that possible to do before she starts drawing? Once it’s out, she’ll change tactics to removal, so I’m trying to figure out if I should just keep other emergency options open.

Yes, you can respond to the activation of Greater Good. With a few exceptions (namely mana abilities and spells with Split Second), you always get a chance to respond to spells and activated/triggered abilities.

So, you can activate Sisay if you'd like. That way you can get out a Nekusar or Syr Konrad. Notably, the creature that gets sacrificed to Greater Good will go to the graveyard as part of activating the ability, so you can't bring out Syr Konrad in response to try to get in that 1 damage. He has to be out when your roommate activates Greater Good.

Also, Narset, Parter of Veils would work well here too. Your roommate loses a creature, can't draw cards, and has to discard three cards.

Hope this helps!!
