Questions about Heroic in different situations

Asked by phrosen63 7 years ago

Hello. I apologize if this thread is in the wrong section. This section seemed the most suitable.

Questions:

  1. Let's assume I have a Satyr Hoplite (1/1, no counters or other buffs yet) on the battlefield, and an Arc Lightning on my hand. I play Arc Lightning and choose to deal 1 damage to my Satyr Hoplite, and two damage to the opposing player. Will my Arc Lightning kill my Satyr before his Heroics effect triggers (which puts a +1/+1 counter on him)? Or will the Heroics effect trigger first and make him survive?

  2. (#1 cont.) If the answer to the above question is Yes: Will assigning all three of the damage points trigger Heroic three times? Or will it only work once per Arc Lightning?

  3. Does equipping trigger Heroic? (Such as: Grappling Hook)

  4. Let's say I have another Satyr Hoplite on the battlefield, and the opponent has some random creature out as well. I cas Prey Upon from my hand, and choose my Satyr and the opponents creature as targets. -Will this (Prey Upon) trigger Heroic, causing my Satyr to become stronger?

  5. If the answer to the above question is Yes: Will my Satyr become stronger in time for the fight? (Meaning of the opponent had an 1/1 creature out; my Satyr would kill the other creatuer and survive)

Thanks in advance. =)

  1. The hoplite will survive. There is a difference between casting a spell and a spell resolving. When you cast arc lightning you choose targets and pay costs. Once you are done doing those 2 things satyr hoplites ability triggers and goes on the stack. The ability resolves and then the arc lightning resolves dealing the damage.

  2. The hoplite would only get 1 trigger. In the rules of heroic it states that a heroic trigger only can be triggered once per spell so even though the spell is targeting it 3 times (in a sense), only one spell as a whole is targetting the hoplite so it gets one trigger and would die.

  3. No because heroic says "when you cast a spell" equipment are considered permanents and you are targeting the hoplite with an activated ability not a spell on the stack. But auras like Unflinching Courage do trigger it because you cast the aura targetting the hoplite so it is being targeted while the aura is on the stack being cast.

  4. The hoplite will get the buff before fighting. Again the term "cast" is important here. After you announce targets and pay costs and have "cast" the spell the hoplites ability trigger goes onto the stack before the prey upon resolves and it gets the counter then the prey upon resolves and they fight.

  5. I kind of answered this in 4 because im on my phone and had to scroll a lot and didnt realize it but yeah...if you have anymore questions feel free to post here as a comment.

HOWEVER please keep in mind future rules questions go in the Q&A forumn in the top banner. Thank you!

  1. Casting Arc Lightning, targeting Satyr Hoplite will cause the heroic trigger to go on the stack, which will resolve, giving the Hoplite +1/+1 before getting pinged by the Lightning.

  2. It would only count as 1 target, so heroic would only trigger once.

  3. Equipping an equipment is not a spell. Instants, sorceries and auras would be the spells that can cause heroic.

  4. Heroic triggers for each creature that is targeted. So your Hoplite will get +1/+1 when you cast Prey Upon targeting it. If you cast Solidarity of Heroes and Strived to target 2 Satyr Hoplite, then both creatures Heroic triggers would activate.

  5. Heroic would go on the stack after Prey Upon, so it would resolve first.

  1. You hoplite lives as heroic reads "whenever you cast a spell that targets". Spells hit the stack before the card effects happen, and you cast it before it hits the stack. So you cast it well before the damage will hit it, giving it the +1/+1 counter well before it takes damage.

  2. Only 1 counter. There is only 1 spell targeting it.

  3. No heroic reads that it has to be a spell targeting it. Abilities are not spells.

  4. Yes. The stack resolves top down. 1. Play prey upon -- spell goes on stack. Casting prey upon triggers heroic trigger goes on top of stack. If nothing else is added to the stack, then it resolves top down. Your heroic trigger is on top, so it resolves first; followed by the actual spell -- in this case: prey upon.

  5. Yes. Read 1 & 4.

Also for #2, it's only being targeted by Arc Lightning once (even though you're assigning the full damage to it), so it of course only triggers once. Less intuitive would be Seeds of Strength which would actually target the creature multiple times (if you chose to do so). Even in this case, Heroic only triggers once because the event of casting a spell that targets Satyr Hoplite is only happening once, even though the event of targeting Satyr Hoplite happens three times.
