Polymorphist's Jest and converted mana cost.

Asked by TheWoogaknight 9 years ago

My friend saw this new card in the M15 spoilers and wanted to know what happens to the creatures that get turned into frogs.

Do they keep the converted mana cost and name, or are they 'like' tokens (but obviously not tokens) with just 'Frog' as the name?

Friend wants to know because of card interactions like Ratchet Bomb or Abrupt Decay .

They retain their CMC and name. What changes is their Type, Color, and P/T. as an example, Emrakul, the Aeons Torn would be a 1/1 Blue Frog named Emrakul, the Aeons Torn with CMC 15.

It should be noted that CMC is not a written characteristic of a card. Mana cost is not the same as converted mana cost. CMC is the pure quantity of mana required to cast something. Mana cost is the exact quantity and colors of mana required to cast something. CMC is derived from mana cost.

In general: if an effect changes the characteristics of something, it only changes those things it specifically talks about. Everything else is left unchanged. The exception to this is copy effects, which copy all the written characteristics of a card except for those things they specifically do differently (Phyrexian Metamorph , Quicksilver Gargantuan , etc.).
