If I Ensoul Artifact a Smuggler's Copter do I still get to draw and discard when I attack?

Asked by Argy 7 years ago

I think that I do, because the only thing that Ensoul Artifact is overriding is the P/T.

Yes you do.

This is because of the layer system. Effects that set P/T and effects that add or remove types are in different layers than effects that add or remove abilities, so the abilities of your Smuggler's Copter will be unaffected by the Ensoul Artifact.

SWEET!

Thanks for the response.

You are the only person who has ever mentioned layers to me.

Makes so much more sense of things.

Yeah layers are a pain to figure out, but they're definitely worth doing so.

Mention the card Humility to anyone in the judge program and you'll probably see them involuntarily cringe lol. That card is a layers nightmare and is almost guaranteed to show up on a judge exam.

The key thing to remember here is that a card will only do what it says. Because Ensoul Artifact doesn't say it adds, removes, or changes anything about the artifact's abilities, that means it will leave them as they are.

Rhadamanthus can it still be tapped for mana?

Could it be tapped for mana before? You can still tap the Smuggler's Copter to pay for Improvise costs, and if it has a counter on it it can be tapped for the mana ability Rishkar gives it. Ensoul Artifact doesn't remove mana abilities from things that have them, but it wouldn't give one to Smuggler's Copter either.
