Hidden information in Bo3

Asked by stensiagamekeeper 5 years ago

Ok so my question relates to any effect that causes a card to be "face down" in an otherwise public zones e.g. Gonti, Lord of Luxury , Thief of Sanity , Bomat Courier or any manifest. Say I was playing against UB at the protour and got royally mana screwed game 1. Nothing really happened in the entire game except I played an Island and he plays a Thief of Sanity hitting me once before i concede. Say the thief hits me and sees 2 islands and a Root Snare and he exiles the fog and puts the islands in my bin. Taking into account the competitive setting am I allowed to look at the exiled card before shuffling it into my deck seeing as it could give me vital information as to whether my opponent knows about what I'm playing for game two? Also is this the same for other similar effects I mentioned?

P.S. I am aware that morphed creatures need to be revealed between rounds.

According to the Magic Tournament Rules, 3.12:

Throughout the match...players are responsible for...making reasonable efforts to prevent hidden information from being revealed. (trimmed to just the relevant portion)

Given that while a card is exiled face-down by something such as Thief of Sanity , only players who've been specifically allowed to look at the face-down card may do so, it sounds like your opponent is under no obligation to let you see what card he chose to exile. He may do so at his own choosing, but since it was hidden information to you (and not covered by the "face down permanents and spells" rule, which is 707 if you're wondering), he doesn't have to and you probably shouldn't try to take a peek.

To clarify, does this apply to, for example, when I scoop up my cards at the end of game 1. It just sounds like you are talking only about in that game not between games 1 and 2.

"Throughout the match" indicates between games 1 and 2, and 2 and 3, in addition to during the games themselves, since that between time is still part of the match.

If your opponent left you to scoop up the exiled cards rather than putting them back on/in your library for you, then it would probably come down to a judge call.

The game zones only exist while the game is in progress, meaning the card is no longer exiled face-down after the game ends. You own the card and you're allowed to look at it, just as you're allowed to look through your deck after the game ends.

I was going off of what information I could find on the topic through Google. Not much was available. I'll defer to Rhadamanthus on this one.
