Fortify vs Equip

Asked by SorcerersBone 9 years ago

I have a Dryad Arbor (or some other man land) on the field, and I fortify it with Darksteel Garrison . Next turn I play Bludgeon Brawl and attempt to equip the garrison to the dryad.

Is that allowed? The Darksteel Garrison wasn't technically equipping the land so it could become an equipment in addition to a fortification and do both right?

Also, can I fortify one land and equip a different creature as long as Bludgeon Brawl is out?

First, the relevant rulings are below, but basically the simple thing to keep in mind is that attached is attached. Whether you're using the fortify, equip or aura.

"Next turn I play Bludgeon Brawl and attempt to equip the Darksteel Garrison to the Dryad Arbor ."

"So it could become an equipment in addition to a fortification and do both right?"

  • Yes, Darksteel Garrison will have both an equip ability and a fortify ability on it and it can be attached to any legal targets.

"Also, can I fortify one land and equip a different creature as long as Bludgeon Brawl is out?"

  • No, both fortify and equipment move Darksteel Garrison and attach it to the new target. You're not allowed to fortify it to a land and also equip it to a creature at the same time.

Fortification is to lands what Equipment is to creatures. Except for the difference regarding what kind of permanent it can affect, Fortifications and Equipment follow the same rules.

While Bludgeon Brawl is on the battlefield, an Aura enchantment that somehow becomes an artifact in addition to its other types will also become an Equipment. Any of its abilities that refer to either "enchanted creature" or "equipped creature" refer to the creature it's currently attached to. It can be attached to other creatures using its equip ability. If you try to attach the Aura Equipment to a creature it can't legally be attached to, it remains where it is. If the creature it's attached to becomes an illegal permanent for it to enchant, the Aura Equipment will be put into its owner's graveyard as a state-based action.

Oh, so does that mean if I run an aura deck with the above scenario, and play a Mycosynth Lattice , I can equip auras (let say Ethereal Armor ) to different creatures as if they were just regular old equipments?

Yes, that would allow you to move auras around with the equip ability. However, they still keep the "Enchant NN" abilities that define what they're legally allowed to be attached to. For example: activating the equip ability of a Chained to the Rocks won't cause it to become attached to the targeted creature, because it can only be attached to a Mountain you control.
