Athreos and the Flip Planeswalkers

Asked by krikkitelder 8 years ago

If i have an Athreos, God of Passage in play, as well as a transformed Liliana, Defiant Necromancer  Flip and someone kills the planeswalker (using Hero's Downfall etc.) does liliana enter the graveyard as a creature (Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip) and thus trigger athreos' triggered ability?

No.

A double-sided card can only be face-up in the graveyard, but on it's way there, it will be whichever face it was when it was on the battlefield - in this case a planeswalker. In order for Athreos's ability to trigger, it needs to be a creature that dies (meaning being put from the battlefield into the graveyard), which is not the case here.

The key concept for athreos is Last Known Information. Basically, he will trigger only if the card was a creature permanent in its very last moment on the battlefield.

For example, as said above, it will not work with flip planeswalkers, since they are planeswalkers when transformed (as detailed above). However, a Banishing Light animated by Starfield of Nyx's second ability will trigger Athreos's ability, since the LKI was that it was creature.
