What am I doing wrong?

TappedOut forum

Posted on Jan. 25, 2016, 8:19 p.m. by ninjaclevs13

So I have this deck. I decided it was the one I wanted to deck cycle daily and try and get upvotes. I followed Epochalyptik's advice verbatim, and spent hours creating a description. I have also spent hours tweaking the deck.

But here I am. The deck has over 500 views in a couple days, which means it catches people's attention, but only 1 upvote and no comments. I'm not really sure what else to do.

I think it was Femme_Fatale that said the only decks that got noticed were funny decks, budget decks, themed decks, and decks by well known people, or something similar. Well, this fits one of those criteria. I'm at a loss as to what to even do anymore.

Not a big deal amigo, cycle, chat on the forums, keep making decks and eventually people will start looking at your decks more.

You can just jump onto this website that has thousands of users and can't expect people to just start hitting the upvote button. It's a community, get out there, make your name known (ie, engaging in forum activity, helping with suggestions on decks and the likes) and you'll see some results!

=)

If you need any help of recommendations, I'm always a tag away!

Again, you aren't guaranteed to get comments or ratings. Usually, the ratio of views to ratings/comments is very low.

You may have better luck if you start shopping around for similar decks and offering advice based on your experience. You then create the opportunity to bring your deck to the attention of the people most likely to care (the ones who play it or a close version of it). You could also begin a discussion about the format in general and then go into why you think your deck offers something players should be interested in.

The passive approach can only get you so far.

I mean I can only speak for myself but before even clicking the deck...

  • I don't play standard

  • Deck name doesn't catch my attention

  • 2-1 isn't that great a record to put in the deck title

  • I don't care about exact budget, Budget (deck type) would get my attention more than $30 budget

That is before I look at the deck. I will be back in a minute to tell you why I personally wouldn't comment or upvote the deck.

ninjaclevs13,
A few quick thoughts:

  • Kudos to you for following Epoch's guidance!
  • I know the +1s are fun, especially after investing a bunch of time you in a deck you care about. But really, the points don't matter.
  • How much "paying it forward" are you doing? If you're searching out other decks like yours and honestly trying to raise the level of play across the community (by suggesting good cards you know about and asking about the good cards you didn't know about), the points tend to follow. Not always of course, but it helps.
  • My personal experience with the EDH community: I built a Rith, the Awakener deck that wasn't particularly awesome to my mind, and wasn't at all watching the points, but the points just kinda rolled in. I built a Hazezon Tamar deck that I'm actually more proud of b/c it really stretched me as a builder. It has a very similar description. And now I'm kinda watching the points, and it's picking up +1s at about a quarter the rate. So who knows!
  • Do you have an extra +1 button? They can be helpful, as a reminder to others. Just whatever else you do, make any extra buttons TOTALLY obvious. Nothing will turn the community agaist you quite like stealthy +1 buttons!

Good luck on your +1s, and draw well in your games!

OK so things that make me disinclined from upvoting or commenting on the deck:

Wall of spoilers- Explain the deck outside of spoilers and just use them for the more in depth things like discussion of specific choices.

Nested spoilers- there was literally nothing else in that one except more accordions

Budget wasn't as advertised- TCGPlayer widget ratted on you. I know that it is possible to get the cards for the lower price you listed, but it is a good idea to go with what TCG says.

Synergies aren't particularly strong- Yes they are there, yes I can see how the card advantage could get out of control. Not enough synergy to interest me

Picture in description- This is a very personal thing. I hate pictures in descriptions. You already got me to look at your deck, why are you wasting my time making me scroll past a picture to get to the description.

Keep on plugging though. I am far from the target audience for your deck. I just thought that I would provide an in depth analysis of why some people wouldn't be giving feedback on the deck itself. Hopefully someone closer to your target audience will also take the time to give you feed back on what they do and do not like about it.

Listen guys, I really appreciate all of your feedback. It all has really helped and I will be sure to make changes that were suggested.

Gidgetimer: I agree with everything you said except the picture in the description. For some reason, I love it when people have a comical picture in their description, that's just me personally.

ninjaclevs13,
One more minor point, on your "listen guys" comment: Are you sure we're all guys? Not a big deal, but more inclusive language (maybe "listen all") is good for the community ...

January 25, 2016 9:16 p.m.

Epochalyptik says... #9

@clayperce: "Guys" is a common phrase for a group of people and may be used appropriately irrespective of gender.

Epochalyptik,
I've found that to be true on the West coast of the US, but wildly not true in the South and iffy on the East coast. I'm not sure about elsewhere.

JA14732 says... #11

Meh, it's a minor thing anyways. It's not like he's saying, "Hey there manly men of extreme masculinity!" or anything like that. Just using a common colloquialism.

January 25, 2016 9:32 p.m.

Either way, it's a non-issue for most people and situations. Let's stay on topic.

@ninjaclevs13 keep posting funny pictures man, the Internet is too srs sometimes and needs to lighten up or scroll on.

JA14732 I actually laughed out loud for a good minute when I read your comment. I needed that.

clayperce: I didn't really even consider the exclusion of certain parties when I wrote that, its just something we say where I live I guess, which is in ny btw

January 25, 2016 9:41 p.m.

Hey, that was me who said that about the different decks that get attention :)

Anyhow, I guess I'll just give the generic advice of follow the stuff that other people put etc..., but there's honestly no guarantee on anything, Also, what Epoch said about the point/view ration is true, it's generally pretty low for most decks, so I wouldn't be too worried about that.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I followed your advice (all of you) and I got 5 upvotes in about 2 hours without deckcycling! Awesome!

By here's the new name for my deck:

ninjaclevs13,
One quick thing: Your +1 button links to ...

Should it maybe link to ...

instead?

Caligula, Epochalyptik, Gidgetimer, clayperce, JA14732, and FAMOUSWATERMELON:

I want to thank you all for your excellent advice. I followed what you guys said to do, and everything else has fallen into place. I now have 9 upvotes, over 1,000 views, it has been added to some people's folders, and it even made it into the top 25 on the site at one point. Thank you all so much!

I also changed the description a little, following Gidgetimer's advice:

Thanks a lot! It's a big leap from going 0-3 two weeks ago. After I made this deck on tappedout, I was forced to look at the decklist more closely, and made changes for the better. I also got my hands on a Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip, which is exciting.
