What Have I Missed?

Standard forum

Hi guys. I've recently come back from a break from MtG. I used to play Standard in the Ravnica Block. Shortly before Dragon's Maze was released I left the hobby, and now I'm interested in getting back into it. So, I would like to know what the current Standard is like. What are the competitive colour combinations? How would I go about building a deck with all these new cards? Finally, are Shocklands still the thing? I've got a lot from the RtR block. Thanks everyone.

Welcome back!

Debatably here are the top 5 decks

  1. Esper Control
  2. Mono Black Devotion (sometimes with a splash)
  3. Mono Blue
  4. G/R and Jund Monsters
  5. R/w burn5.5 R/x Aggro

Shock lands are still very much a things as they are the best lands in standard! They also see tons of play in modern so they will never not be a thing.

Hope this helps.

Esper is far from the top deck, U/W is better right now and has been for a majority of this standard season. All U/W/x Control decks are viable though. Black devotion (MBD) and it's variants are the top decks. G/R Monsters and it's worse spin-off Jund Monsters have been on a rapid decline because of MBD. Blue and U/W Devotion are in the same boat. R/w Burn, Naya or G/W Hexproof, black aggro, and red aggro have been on the rise. These decks are good against MBD and U/W/x Control.

SCG Open Top 8

Grand Prix Top 8

This should give you a good snap shot of what standard decks are good.

Guys you for got to mention the best deck in standard right now... Maze's End Turbofog!

But seriously, all I see at FNMs are U/W/x control, Mono Black Devotion, Mono Blue Devotion, G/R/x monsters, and R/W burn decks. Ocassionally I'll see a B/W midrange deck. I don't even see R/x aggro decks anymore (outside of my own, Izzetbreath Dragon).

Okay, thanks guys. So, I've noticed the cycle of God Enchantments going around; are they any good? What I mean by that is, could a player build a deck solely around one God and it's colour combination/s? Would it be decent?

Mono Blue (or its UW brethren) is essentially built around Thassa, God of the Sea as well as Master of Waves . In fact, most of the deck is filled with mediocre RTR block creatures, most of which saw little to no play last rotation, simply due to their Devotion (ex. Frostburn Weird , Nightveil Specter , and mainboard Tidebinder Mage ). That's probably the best example since Thassa is usually a 3- or 4-of, although almost any God fits pretty well into its color scheme as a 1- or 2-of.

However, if you're planning on building around a God, watch out for the latest Journey hater, Deicide .
