Duskmantle Guildmage vs. Nighveil Specter

Hey everyone!

So I've been running Mindshrieker in my U/B Dimir Mill deck, Perfection of Milling. It hasn't been working out.

To replace it, I think I want to either add Duskmantle Guildmage or Nightveil Specter . Any opinions on this are greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Nightveil Specter only really works against decks running one or both of your colors, in my experience (since it simply says 'play' as opposed to 'play without paying its mana cost'). Seeing as most decks these days don't run blue as much as they used to thanks to Boros and Gruul, Duskmantle Guildmage is what I'd do.

Duskmantle Guildmage . for the specter, you need to have the mana base to cast their spells. Also, turn 5 jace, MA turn 6 double activate duskmantle's first ability and you get in 20 damage on the opponent with Jace's 0.

Wow I feel stupid, I didn't even think of that. Thanks!

I think I'll go with Duskmantle Guildmage just from that.

Note that it's not an entire whiff against decks with different colors. Since it says "play" instead of "cast" you have the opportunity to play their lands if you exile one, which in turn could let you play their stuff.

At first I was like ohhh Nightveil Specter sounds like fun.... now I'm like pass

1/24/2013 Playing a card exiled with Nightveil Specter follows all the normal rules for playing that card. You must pay its costs, and you must follow all timing restrictions, for example.Gatherer.It also says that it has to be the same Nightveil Specter(so a second one would leave those cards exiled)

so the Duskmantle Guildmage is the marginally better choice, but you still need 7 mana to do both to drain two life.I'd assume you have Liliana of the Dark Realms or Crypt Ghast present to deal with this issue?

@ MagnorCriol - That is true, but I still think the Guildmage provides the better mechanics, especially for the price. It turns Mind Sculpt into mill 7 for 2, to mill 7 and 7 damage for 5.

@ TwistTim - I actually don't plan on using the second ability of the Guildmage, unless I have the mana to completely blow, which I don't plan on. The deck name is in the original post, so feel free to check the deck out to see how I am using it.

ducttapedeckbox - I tend to agree. I think the Specter is a cool card in a vaccuum but not particularly effective overall. I was just pointing out that it's not as dead versus decks not in your colors as some people seemed to be thinking it was.

card:Thespian's Stage and/or Chromatic Lantern make Nightveil Specter much more playable. Not that you should do it but that's how you would do it.

I am currently trying out the Nightveil Specter + Chromatic Lantern combo in my deck and it was surprisingly fun. My friend did not expect me to play their Thragtusk and Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip after I exiled them. It was a very, different, fun, and interesting take on our games. :)
