I was thinking about iconic and well liked tribes in magic that could be in Commander 2017, when I thought of squirrels. I knew Mark Rosewater had always said he wanted to bring them back, but never had the opportunity to really print them. Well here it is.
Then I remembered that Mark Rosewater never designed supplemental sets, only standard ones, and I got sad and realized it would never be. But I checked anyway. On the credits page of Commander 2017, Mark Rosewater is listed under the credits. I checked past Commander sets (2016, 2015, 2014) and saw that his name was not in the credits, making this year's set special if MaRo decided to take part in it. Why else would he help design a tribal set? That's right.
SQUIRRELS!!!
CheeseBro,
Plus, Acorn Catapult was in the original Commander decks. So there's clear support there already :-D

Well, if one tribe is Dragons, aren't the other tribes likely going to be the other iconics?

It would be more fun than the same old same old that we usually get.

Aight, so humor me. What do squirrels bring to MtG aside from the obvious kawaii desu ne factor? They just make vanilla tokens atm. Then there's acorns. Is that really design space we want to invest in? If not, what the hell do we want to do with squirrels that elves don't already do?
I mean, squirrels...

Kinda grasping at straws here. But I kinda hope your right. Hope we can get merfolk and kithkin

He's said in the past iirc (possibly on blogatog? Don't recall but probably there) that Squirrels will never be in a standard set, but that he would want them to reappear in a supplemental one. Perhaps this is the prophesied one?

Sorry, we just had a dragon standard set like a year ago, and now there's a dragons deck. It's just a big flying nasty that has firebreathing, what other design space is there?
Coincidentally, there's some really creative people that work at WotC. There's enough creativity in that room to come up with a breakfast themed set and have it be thematically viable. Squirrels have tons of room.

Your first paragraph gives the impression that design options are highly limited while your second paragraph tells me the sky is the limit. Which one is it?
You're also not not offering me any suggestions as to what unique thing squirrels could do. I'm sorry, but I just don't see it.

they will bite your nuts!
Commander: Nibbles, King of the squirrels
2BUG 2/4 squirrel advisor
2G create a 1/1 squirrel token
Whenever a squirrel you control deals combat damage to a player, permanents that player control don't untap on their next untap phase
Bam! Three color squirrels!

If only Earthcraft wasn't on the reserved list it would fit in perfect and make a potential squirrel tribal deck the chase deck

Probably a couple new cards that support the archetype, like how there was some Saproling support in the Saskia C16 commander deck despite it being heavy aggro.
