I think the key to this deck being successful is to make sure you have some 4 of's. It will make your deck more consistent. Also 4 Fatal Push is almost mandatory for any deck running black. Unlicensed Disintegration is okay, but without artifacts it's not that great, so unless you are running more than 3 artifacts, I would replace them with something else. Transgress the Mind is strictly better than Lay Bare the Heart because it can get Aetherworks Marvel. I really like the Cartouche of Zeal and Trial of Ambition control/aggro piece. Also some Foreboding Ruins and Smoldering Marsh to smooth out your mana.

Don't worry, all the cards that are about to rotate are under 3 bucks. That's just the way standard is.

Transgress the Mind is better than Lay Bare the Heart, specifically because it can get Aetherworks Marvel. You might want to put Dispossess in your sideboard as well. Yahenni's Expertise is also good for weenie board wipes. Murder or Ruinous Path over Final Reward. Ob Nixilis Reignited would also be good here. Fatal Push over Dead Weight. You would get more value out of Oath of Liliana than Trial of Ambition if you put in Ob. Also Grasp of Darkness needs to be in here as well. I would even consider putting in Harsh Scrutiny

If you are going budget, then the tribal is the way to go. I've had some success at FNM with it. We just had a pact at the time not to play Copy Cat or Mardu Vehicles. But now zombies is a thing and I love tribal decks anyways so I am a little biased.

I think the Needle Spires are worth it. But Aether Hub is a good option for those times you just need a mana to explode. I run all of them. I would actually drop the Hazoret the Fervent for 2 more Metallic Mimic. I think to beat zombies you are just going to have to go faster than them. Which if you are playing mono black is pretty hard. I run a fun version of this, and it sneaks games to people who doubt the power of a Hanweir Garrison + Bloodlust Inciter.

The reason you want to play spirits is to fly over zombies and green black energy. And that means trying to be as fast as them. Zombies can go wide despite control and can bounce back fairly quick. G/B Energy is going to out value your creatures and get bigger. Also you are going to want to be on curve. So lands like Prairie Stream and Port Town are very valuable to your success. Also the other reason this deck can be appealing is the ability to flash your creatures, getting tempo. Spell Queller is a great utility card for that. You are able to protect it with Selfless Spirit (which should be a 4 of), Rattle Chains, and other counter magic. You really either want to go spirits tribal which is an aggro deck, or full blown control. Meeting in the middle will just end up not being able to do either very well and have huge inconsistencies with your deck.

Oath of Chandra is a must for any PW with red. Also I would only run 2x Chandra, Flamecaller, and put in 2x Chandra, Torch of Defiance. Also with all the Zombie decks running around now I would also play 4x Declaration in Stone. And Heart of Kiran x4. Take out the Oath of Gideon and (I know you won't like this) Deploy the Gatewatch. Nissa, Steward of Elements feels bad without creatures. I would also run 2 Sweltering Suns over Haze of Pollen.
