Personality and Color Identity (of Players)

I've always struggled with what colors I am, personality wise, so I tried researching actual personality tests and how the colors compare to your personality. From the Myers-Briggs test, which categorizes you into one of 16 different types, I am an "INFJ". To take the test and or view the 16 different types

https://www.16personalities.com

Meanwhile, I saw that someone had listed which color combinations align for each personality. http://sarpadianempiresvol-viii.tumblr.com/post/111565575121/color-pie-friday-16-shades-of-you This website would suggest I am Bant, which I am not quite sure is true or not. Any thoughts? Your personalities and color identities?

ENFP Here. According to your charts that makes me Izzet which was always my favorite guild anyways.

ENFP: apparently I'm Izzet. I've always thought I was Azorius. I'm sticking with that.

INTP-Analyst! Woo, I'm super misunderstood, and I thought it was just me! This makes me Temur based on the color wheel. However, the addition of confuses me as I, and the 16personalities, both state that we aren't the best with feelings, which is directly connected to passionate feelings.

Not sure about the whole Color Wheel deal.

The tumblr post doesn't work. If anyone knows what is what, then I'm a Campaigner.

Onion_duck says... #7

@lonker Campaigner is ENFP so that'd make you The Champion (Red/Blue)

I always considered myself but according to the personality test I am an Architect which makes me . The description is fairly accurate. "They take a very Blue approach to a Green idea" and "have a creative and passionate Red aspect that makes them nonconformists that tend to be aloof of the world around them." Damn and I always thought I was a special little snowflake =P

September 18, 2016 10:31 p.m.

So obviously i'm enfj a. The test says i'm the protagonist, while sarpadian empires doesn't talk about the 'a' and calls me the teacher, which he associates with jeskai. Not bad

Jus so you're aware, the Myers-Briggs is unreliable and invalid. It doesn't measure what it claims to be measuring accurately, and it doesn't produce steady results over time. It's absolutely great for a bit of fun but it's terrible as a serious personality measure.

September 19, 2016 4:53 a.m.

MindAblaze says... #10

A little reading if someone is interested in the Myers-Briggs and how useful it is.

In general though, every personality test only tells part of the story. You can't accurately make predictions on a persons behaviour. I could do an interview and tell you with a reasonable amount of accuracy if person X is going to make behaviour change y in the next z weeks, but there are too many factors to say "this person is this way all the time."

I'm an INFJ as the Advocate (very rare apparently), which is surprising since I usually identified as an INFP. Now for the colors (Ranting time!):

UGH. BANT?! I HATE white (blue I've always hated but slowly warming up to it). This must be some kind of joke! Kick white out of there, shove red in, and that better defines me. A little confession here would be in order: I'm not the most fond of mankind. Sure, help them out, but I don't like working with others. What makes this worse is that there are two color combinations I seriously dislike: Azorius (for lockdown and stax) and Simic (for being downright OP).

It doesn't help that INFP is also categorized by white either. I'm too heavy on green to be Jeskai. This, to me, screams the Trump vs. Clinton scenario: The lesser of two color combinations in which I do NOT belong. end rant

The OCEAN test is also not wholly valid either..... comparing Myers Briggs to another invalid measure of "personality" in the OCEAN is not at all useful. It's about time psychologists stopped with this. Whilst these measures are internally validated against each other they're very poorly EXTERNALLY validated against real world behaviour.

I mean the biggest problem it has it's that it's based on the ideas of Jung and yet Jung himself wrote that binary differences in personality simply do not exist, which therefore renders the MBTI an inaccurate reading of a questionable hypothesis that itself was never tested, made by a man in a different society about a hundred years ago.

September 19, 2016 11:55 a.m.

Just took the test for the first time ever, got ENTP. The magic comparison is Mishra, Artificer Prodigy both no favorite colors and favorite legendary in the game.

MindAblaze says... #15

If anything, a personality test is useful for letting a person identify(perceive) their own strengths. They may be scientifically invalid, but for readiness for change, a person often doesn't need much more than a placebo effect.

MBTI is a very dangerous place to thread.
Scientifically speaking.
Its unfalsifiable, and has a completely rational theory (lacking empirical support).

BUT!

While its completely useless to predict others behaviour,it still has some value, as it provides some insight on how different thought systems are possible to your own.Sadly its often used as a "horoscope for geeks".

I think as you get older you start to come more to terms with who you are, accepting your strengths and your faults. I scored as a Healer, INFP. In the game, I'm usually Rx. I find it interesting that it chose Jeskai for me.

Phaetion says... #26

MindAblaze: So, in this case, you're saying that I should come to terms with being placed in Bant (in this case)? I'm not putting words in your mouth or anything. I'm just trying to understand what your saying and putting it into context.

September 26, 2016 7:52 p.m.

MindAblaze says... #27

To use yours as an example, INFJ and INFP only vary on the Judging/Perceiving scale. You were given Bant instead of Jeskai, which you stated you identify with. As allied colors Green and Red share a number of similarities, so that's easy to write off, but intriguingly you must have scored very solidly Azorius. Perhaps there's a side to your personality you've disavowed?

September 26, 2016 8:30 p.m.

MindAblaze says... #28

For some people, that could be trying/wanting to control things that are beyond one's control, causing frustration and anger which makes a person feel red, when in their own self-view they're more laissez-faire. Letting things go is very green. Whatever may be will be, especially when combined with white and blue.

September 26, 2016 8:55 p.m. Edited.

Homura_Akemi says... #29

Although I said I was Bant, my test came out as ENFJ which is Jeskai, although if you knew me I'd be more introverted than extroverted (test results were Extroverted to Introverted 53-47%). I suppose that is true I have the strong white blue side, although I wonder if I'm more red or green.

September 26, 2016 9:03 p.m.

MindAblaze says... #30

This Bant vs Jeskai business is interesting, because it's totally about what the central color is. Yes one is red and one is green, but when you score as Bant are you Azorius/Selesnya, Simic/Azorius or Simic/Selesnya? It'll make a world of difference. You'll notice Jeskai is represented by the Teacher and the Healer, but one is blue aligned and the other is white aligned. I would have considered myself to be red-centred Jeskai, so I find it interesting.

September 26, 2016 9:20 p.m.

Phaetion says... #31

MindAblaze: Green was a color I consistently held on to. But I would've identified as before Jeskai. I took the test a second time and got INFJ a second time. I also went onto EDHRec at the Bant options. To my dismay, none of them caught my interest. Superfriends was closest but that said, I hate Humility. It's a card that drags games for hours. That, and I'd sooner have red and black too.

In my younger years, I easily could have been Bant. It was even my favorite shard when Alara was still in Standard. I'm an idealist to the core, and it is recently that I've decided to focus on imagination and creativity. Both of which Azorius lacks. likes things to stagnate and retain the status quo. But that gets boring, and that's easily reflected in the stax decks present in x decks (Derevi, I'm looking at you). However, (not trying to derail the subject), the cruel realities of this world forced a shift that eventually made me drop and, in some ways, and take on a identity. This is only my view. Whether an Azorius side remains in me is uncertain. If it is, it's something I cannot take lightly, seeing it as a tainted part of my identity.

Ok, I rambled on for too long. Bottom line is, Azorius is a color combination that I've grown to dislike these days.

I think that most people, including myself, can confuse color personality among the following four aspects: your actual personality, your values, what magic you would want to use, and how magic would change you if you had the access to use it. For me, my actual personality would probably be Bant, I value nature, freedom, and individuality so Jund, I like to use Jund colors while playing, and if I had access to magic I would probably stay uncorrupted as Bant or Temur.

I've been (almost literally) studying Freud for ~seven weeks, so psychology has been on my mind.

But, yes, I think that's my problem. I've confused everything and made it difficult for myself.

Homura_Akemi: Here's the scary part: We're almost identical to each other. The only difference is you valuing individuality whereas I don't, but I have animosity towards , and, in some ways, .

MindAblaze says... #35

I think at some level were all . We're all meat puppets walking around with emotions and motivations, and when people cross us our "instinct" is to defend, but we're nurtured to react in ways that may or may not reflect the values of the other colors.

September 27, 2016 3:43 p.m.

Phaetion says... #36

"Meat puppets" I'm stealing this.

Phaetion says... #37

Also, something that's been bothering me for some time: If someone had a lot of upvotes on their decks, is that their signature deck(s)? I look at my Kalemne and Ulrich decks and I keep returning to that question. Sure, those high upvoted decks may be good, but are they partial to the builder in this sense?

Another reason I ask is because the playstyles could relate to their personalities...or I'm confusing everything once again.

September 27, 2016 3:59 p.m.

Homura_Akemi says... #38

Lol "meat puppets". I also agree that every person would have some aspect of every color in them, no matter what. Example of me:

Blue: value of education and learning

White: having a moral compass to help others

Green: feeling the most peaceful in the beauty of nature, just focusing on the moment with no other worries

Red: believing in freedom and defiance from authority instead of conforming to set rules

Black: my individuality and own set goals apart from group goals and a little sadistic, dark, macabre sense of humor side

Homura_Akemi says... #39

Phaetion to me upvoting a deck is like a common courtesy. I upvote decks that I like the idea of or cream my own decks in playtesting.

September 27, 2016 4:07 p.m.

Phaetion says... #40

In that sense...

: The ability to help and heal (counseling). Morality may be a factor as well.

: Imagination, dreams, and creativity.

: Embracing death as an old friend...not sure on this one. It might seem more like green's thing. Other than that, I have no true aspect of black in my bones.

: Freedom, creativity (again), emotions, change, defiance (against authorities) if necessary.

: Exploration, nature, empathy, wisdom, animals & plants over humans.

That would be me. And I'm starting to think that this needs its own thread.

That's just me. I don't know how others upvote. Lol this should be it's own thread

MindAblaze says... #43

For me, is knowing that I have to focus on myself first. If I don't, nobody else is going to.

is knowing that helping and healing the population is in the best interest of everyone.

is valuing personal growth through knowledge and exploration.

is loving and hating passionately, quick to anger and quick to forgive. Compassion may be the word.

is the life cycle; there's always a bigger fish...monkeys killing monkeys killing monkeys over pieces of the land...only the strong survive.

I honestly believe and feel most of these things most days, and wouldn't give it up. Obviously you can't be all these things all the time, and I'm guessing I've got a few years on you guys, but what is important changes with the wind it seems lately...

I test as extreme NF and middle-either/or-depending on mood/particular questions asked for I/E and J/P. I think I am intrinsically I but adapted E and inwardly J but outwardly P.

So something x where x!= varying by situation but tending toward - predominantly

I think I can understand especially insofar as it shares commonality with but I really dislike it and that creates a mental block (and sometimes a twitch).

I think if you're trying to characterize a person through their Magic playing style, you need to go deeper than just colour. For instance, I've run into a lot of players who play the same colours as me, but are totally different personalities... but they WILL choose different cards in those colours.

I think a player's personality comes through more in the archetype of decks they make... for instance, I have a friend who is EXTREMELY competitive, even among groups of friends, and he ALWAYS prefers playing aggro decks over midrange and control... He plays Infect and Affinity in Modern (because he believes that having the advantage early is always better). The surprising thing about him is that he's a really quiet guy, very polite, but still; because of his competitiveness, he gets extremely upset when he loses, but instead of complaining, he'll just leave (especially if something was on the line).

I have another friend who is not quite as competitive as that other one, but like everyone, he likes to win... he's just okay with losing as well. He collects foil angels, and his favourite colour is white, so he will always try to make decks with some white in them, usually midrange combat-based decks where he'll build up a board then use combat tricks to pick off his opponent's creatures and put out universal voltron cards. This guy is very vocal, loud, boisterous, and he's a HUGE guy, so he sometimes tries to be intimidating too (but more on a humourous level). He's also a surprisingly good player, so he gets into a lot of epic showdowns where you got this 300lb guy with his white/whatever deck (probably with an epic angel of some kind somewhere in there) going to turn 11 and everybody's watching. It's pretty hilarious. This guy is just too casual of a player to get as angry as the other dude, and he likes to take his rage out in a friendly game of EDH after the fact.

I have another buddy who plays Red Deck Wins in every standard, and has a Modern Burn deck. He's also a pretty big guy, and he always plays Red, no matter what other colours he might splash. He's a pretty laid-back guy, although he was much more competitive when I first met him (probably because his deck WAS the meta at that time). He's not quite as loud and off-the-wall as my other friend; he'll joke from time to time (sometimes his jokes are minorly rude), but for the most part, this guy just comes to play and open packs, and win or lose, his attitude doesn't really change much.

Myself; I'm a casual player and hardcore collector (along with my brother). I like making decks and expanding my knowledge of the game, but I've always loved Magic most for the art and flavour of the cards. My favourite colours are black and blue (because I love milling and control). I like to win, yes, but I'm fine with losing too, and I make sure to learn from my losses. Magic is just a game, and the way I see it is that I win through my collection!
