How do I Garruk?

I'm having some problems understanding the best plays from Garruk Relentless  Flip . With the ever-looming threat of Lightning Bolt I found it hard to decide whether to start building a small token army with him or whether to use him to say, kill a Dark Confidant and flip - but then essentially do little before dying (except be a 4 mana killspell).

Does anyone have experience with this card? Any recommendations?

I'm looking at using him as a replacement for Creakwood Liege

I don't know what deck you're slotting him into, but look at it this way.

You play him and kill a Bob, you just got a 1 for 1. If he gets Bolted, you now have a 2 for 1. If he gets attacked, it sucks, but you have a 1 for 1 which isn't bad.

You play him and make a token, and he gets Bolted. You have a 1 for 1 that's not really in your favor, and that token is unlikely to be worth a card. (But if it trades with a good creature, then sure, value)

Board state depending, but if you can get a kill out of Garruk that is usually the way to go.

Four mana removal spell with upside isn't too bad, all things considered.

Sounds fair enough. My deck is budget golgari attrition. Much like classic Rock but without Dark Confidant , Liliana of the Veil , and Tarmogoyf . I have a controlly early game and a token producing late game.

Instead of deck helping I was just looking more for advice about how to play him and when he excels.

Well that's what my comment points to. It's better to get immediate value if the opportunity presents itself. Garruk is a very good midrange card. It can one for one in the early game, but generate insane value later on.

Vraska is much the same way, but with less versatility. Look to how she is played in standard for a model on how to play Garruk. She comes in, -3s, and then starts plussing to do it again. Anything beyond the first hit is just gravy, but you happily pay 5 mana to activate it once, instead of plussing immediately to try and do something later.

That seems legit.

As a heads up, what color are your tokens for late game? Because Illness in the Ranks is becoming a thing to shut down twin so it will see some action and it obviously can cause tokens issue. Color dependent, you could use some buffs to avoid them dying

I'm golgari but my tokens are 2/2 and 3/3.
