Thoughts on Thantis

  • Thantis: A lot of theories, which ones are good?

  • Anyone playtested with proxies? I have, with a few notes.

  • Seems like people are focused a little too much on the deathtouch & pillowfort stuff. I claim that deathtouch was quite underwhelming in comparison to LIFELINK as a rattlesnake & juicy forced combat mechanism to keep you in games.

  • Don't know about other metas but mine always has 1-2 non-combatant wincon decks/game. Thantis was most effective at supplying fodder, building that, & directing it via: parallel token generators, hunted cycle, and vows.

  • Effectiveness increased in a major way when gearing the other 1/2 of the deck toward dmg triggering curses & auras, essentially groupslug and slow-bleed for non-combat finishers. This was a surprising game-ender when the inevitable "mass creature destructions" attempted to control the board.

  • Currently working on a fun political Thantis deck - The Brown Spider - suggestions (group slug or others welcome)

Thantis is one of the only cards I'm actually interested in from this set, I only have 2 decks assembled in paper but I might have to make a second Jund deck just to play him. Trove of Temptation finally has a deck it fits into.

  • Haha, yeah. I possibly will place Trove of Temptation back in the deck. In theory, the trove is great if you have some lifelink on your side of the battlefield as well.

  • If you like playing fast&loose planeswalkers also might as well have the same type of lure text as trove. People will make some ill-advised attacks to get rid of those walkers...Then spider crackback. Funny story about that: I had someone swing five 1/1's at my face to get rid of my walker, when Thantis had lifelink... Interesting effect that if someone overruns with 1/1's (if you can block 1) you can let the rest through unblocked and GAIN life from the attack. Add Hardened Scales & you can start letting 2/2's through unblocked.

I would say damage doublers like Dictate of the Twin Gods might also be good in his deck too. Maybe things like Crawlspace to limit the number of attackers? Or something that makes it even tougher to attack you with giant hordes.

Or of course the classic combo of Pariah's Shield and Stuffy Doll
