What spells am I allowed to cast in my upkeep step?

Asked by jotjot 11 years ago

Braid of Fire is an insane card cause you can produce a lot of red mana, BUT only in your upkeep step. Once you end your upkeep step the mana that was produced will drain/disappear. I know you can activate abilities on your upkeep step, but I'm wondering, what spells am I allowed to cast in my upkeep step?

Instants and spells with flash are the only ones which can be played during your upkeep. There are a few exceptions, like Rout and Necromancy , but these are very rare.

Comet Storm is pretty popular for massive direct damage at instant speed. Also, Ghitu Fire falls under the same category as the exceptions The_Wizard mentioned.

Cards like Vedalken Orrery will allow you to cast whatever spells you want whenever you want basically. If you don't have anything that gives your cards flash you are limited to their timing restrictions. That said you could only than cast Instants during your Upkeep

Under normal circumstances, you an play: instants, creatures with flash, abilities of artifacts/enchantments/creatures (as long as the creature doesn't have summoning sickness if it has a TAP cost that is required).

If you have any other spells/abilities you must wait until your main phase such as sorcery spells or abilities like Whip of Erebos . Planeswalker abilities are also only allowed during main phases

There are things like Hypersonic Dragon that allow you to cast sorcery spells anytime you can cast an instant. If these are under your control then you can make additional plays, but unless you do than those listed above are the only things you can "sync" your mana into

Also, be advised that some abilities (such as equip) can ONLY be done anytime you can cast a sorcery...so make sure to read the ability before trying to perform the action

Do not forget, upkeep is also for paying... upkeeps! Which you can also use Braid of Fire for, should you have cumulative or other upkeep costs, Mystic Remora for example.
