Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle in combination with Dryad of the Ilysian Grove along with Lands that do not specify the type mountain.

Asked by Hunt381 4 years ago

So I’m trying to build a deck that involves Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove and a bunch of different lands. I have been debating with a friend whether or not the ability of Valakut And the second ability of dryad would be triggered off of all lands I could possibly play. For example if I had both Valakut and dryad on the field. And I played a land like Breeding Pool, would it be given the land type mountain and then cause valakut to trigger and deal damage?

Yes, because as said in Dryad of the Ilysian Grove's text, Breeding Pool is also an island, Mountain, Forest, Swamp, and Desert.

Well, not a desert...

Probably meant Plains, as desert is not a basic land type.

Isn't wastes the colorless basic land type? Anyways, your valakut is not looking for basic mountains, just any card that has Mountain in its types. This is a very decent combo. Even the gatherer text says they have to be is mountains as well

Now there is something to remember, when you play the land, you gain control of it before valakut has a chance to use its ability. When the valakut ability triggers it will see the new land as a mountain, then count the total number of other mountains (all your lands are mountains) and if it adds to 5 it'll deal damage.

Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle’s triggered ability has an “intervening ‘if’ clause.” That means (1) the ability won’t trigger at all unless, at the time a Mountain enters the battlefield under your control, you control five or more Mountains other than that new one, and (2) the ability will do nothing if you control fewer than five Mountains other than that new one by the time it resolves

Wastes are colorless basic lands. If you notice though, they have no subtype. Things like Dryad of the Ilysian Grove and the older Prismatic Omen do not grant the ability to tap for colorless.

Prismatic Omen used to be run in some Scapeshift lists because of the interaction OP is asking about. Instead of needing to grab 7 lands to deal 18, you could grab 6 including both Valakuts that the decks ran and deal 36.
