Tree of Redemption timing
Asked by DukeNicky 13 years ago
Ok so this has happened to me twice, once in pre-release and again with a friend. I have an Invisible Stalker being pumped either with equipment or Kessig Wolf Run to about 12. the opponent has 11 life. I declare that I attack, than he says he taps Tree of Redemption to swap life totals and can survive the attack. Now is this a legal move/time to play the Tree or does it have to be playyed before I declare my attackers/their blockers?
....I really hate this tree
lol
But thanks for answering the question :)

No problem!
Try putting some control cards in your deck such as Sensory Deprivation or Silent Departure

If your friend tries this again later, hit the tree with a Twisted image 2 to get rid of it. Or even better, Diminish or Turn to Frog for super-lolz.

Actually I believe targeting it with Twisted image 2 in response of he using the ability would kill the opponent, because the Tree of Redemption would be put into a graveyard as a state based action, but the ability would continue on the stack, using the last known information about the tree, (13/0) thus making your opponent have 0 life... Though I'm not sure if the exchange works if it's dead.

Exchanges don't work like damage, actually. They don't use LKI. If the Tree isn't on the field when the ability resolves, the exchange won't happen.

@MagnorCriol I though that could be true. Sorry for the inaccurate answer then...
What is LKI?

It's all good, it's not hard to believe it'd work that way if it did, since the game does it like that often. They've just made exchanges a special exception.
"LKI" = "Last Known Information".

Tree of Redemption ability is considered an instant, so it can be used immediately after you declare attackers, before he declares blockers. So yes it is a legal move.
