Tree of Redemption and equipment?
Asked by Demarge 13 years ago
let's say my Tree of Redemption has an Argentum Armor equipped and I'm at 10 life, I use the tree's effect and what happens? is the tree now a 6/10 and I'm at 19 life, is the tree a 6/16 and I'm at 13 life, or is the tree a 6/16 and I'm now at 19 life?

Tree of Redemption 's ability checks what its toughness is when the ability resolves, including any modifiers to it. Your life will become 19, and your tree's toughness will become 10.

Oh whoops, I forgot to add the +6 from the Armor after the effect. 19 life, 16 toughness.

Oracle ruling on Tree of Redemption :
9/22/2011: Any toughness-modifying effects, counters, Auras, or Equipment will apply after its toughness is set to your former life total. For example, say Tree of Redemption is enchanted with Spectral Flight (which makes it 2/15) and your life total is 7. After the exchange, Tree of Redemption would be a 2/9 creature (its toughness became 7, which was then modified by Spectral Flight) and your life total would be 15.
Your post-resolution life total will reflect the pre-resolution modified toughness of Tree of Redemption, but the Tree will continue to have the modifiers applied to it afterward.

Do Sanguine Bond and Tainted Sigil work?
It seems like they should not. You are not losing life. You life total is changing

Yeah, I found this out when I put Eternity Vessel into a deck. Whenever your life total is 'set' to anything, you actually gain or lose the life.
On Friday, I used Tree and Sanguine Bond to kill someone in an EDH game. Lots of oohs and aahs.

118.5. If an effect sets a player's life total to a specific number, the player gains or loses the necessary amount of life to end up with the new total.
Tainted Sigil + Sanguine Bond is a fun combo. I ran it in an old deck, along with Beacon of Immortality and Exsanguinate .

Tree of Redemption states exchange its toughness with your life total, so that woould count the +6 from the Armor, and any other toughness buff it has. So things would be come, you have 19 life and the Tree become a 6/16 since it would have a base toughness of your 10 life plus the Armor's buff of +6
