Sunblade Elf and Experiment One Evolve

Asked by Sabbath91 9 years ago

If I controll a 1/1 Experiment One and a Plains and I play a Sunblade Elf , does the Sunblade Elf enter as a 2/2 and therefor evolve the Experiment One ? If so? Is the Sunblade Elf a 2/2 whilst on the stack or is it only once on the battlefield?

Thanks.

Sunblade Elf 's ability is a static ability so it just applies when he is in play. He enters as a 2/2 and evolves your Experiment One .

I'm unsure why his power on the stack matters, but his ability is not a Characteristic Defining Ability so it only works on the battlefield unless otherwise stated (which his doesn't). It is a 1/1 anywhere except the battlefield.

Sunblade Elf is a 1/1 while it's still a spell on the stack, but it will evolve Experiment One . Because you have a Plains , the Elf enters the battlefield as a 2/2. There's no period of time, not even a very short one, when the Elf is on the battlefield yet somehow not getting the bonus from its ability. Because a "bigger" creature entered the battlefield, Experiment's evolve ability will trigger.

I'm sorry that first paragraph should read "Sunblade Elf 's ability is a static ability so it is simply true when he is in play. He would enter as a 2/2 and evolve your Experiment One as long as you control a Plains ."

Thanks guys! I dunno if the power on the stack scenario would ever matter but its good to know just in case.

Essence Backlash and Spellbreaker Behemoth are the only cards I found that seem to care about a creature spell's power. So yeah, it will probably never matter.

It's actually way more important that it doesn't get the bonus while it's in the graveyard, hand, or library, since there are several power-dependent effects that do things with cards in those zones.

Rhadamanthus there's Morgue Burst as well.

Necrobump FTW, also Morgue Burst doesn't care about the power on the stack, it cares about the power in the graveyard. There are loads of things that look at power in zones besides the battlefield (Mayael the Anima , Bioplasm , Dead Reckoning , Grenzo, Dungeon Warden , Sutured Ghoul , Reveillark to name a few), my confusion was on why power on the stack mattered.
