Progenitor Mimic, Riku of Two Reflections, and a bunch of flicker

Asked by leach 11 years ago

A previous question established that you can have one Progenitor Mimic copy another to get two tokens in an upkeep. I started thinking about that for my Riku of Two Reflections commander deck, and want to verify something. Can I actually pull off the following chain?

First, I have Riku out, a creature worth mimicking, and cast Progenitor Mimic . It hits the field as a copy of creature X, triggers Riku's ability which I then use to get a token. That token can copy the original mimic, thus getting two (useless) token-spawning triggers on it.

Now I bring in some flickering (from Deadeye Navigator , Ghostly Flicker , or the like), bouncing the card mimic in and out, and each time it hits the battlefield I (1) have it copy the most recent token, and (2) make another token copying the card. Assuming the card survives to the next upkeep, I get a boatload of tokens spawned off of it, right?

Here's a graphic to help, after three cycles of the card hitting the battlefield. Bracketed cards were flickered out previously and so aren't actually there, but are just holding places. Numbers in parentheses are the number of token-spawning abilities. Arrows show copying

Creature X <- [card(1)] <- token(2) <- [card(3)] <- token(4) <- card(5) <- token(6)

So next upkeep I get 5 tokens, each of which has 5 (useless) token-spawning triggers on it. Right? (Good in case my current highest-trigger one gets killed.)

This seems pretty complex but appears to work out by the rules. Can someone confirm it'll actually work like this?

Thanks.

The biggest problem you have here is the Legendary Rule; when you create a copy of Riku of Two Reflections , they will both go to the graveyard as a state based action. If you have Mirror Gallery out, then this looks like it should work!

Edit: The main flaw I can see is if Riku's copying ability somehow doesn't stack the spawning triggers, but it seems like it should since it's a sort of enters-the-battlefield effect.

to: Denial048 The point isn't to copy Riku, but rather something else (Magmatic Force , Artisan of Kozilek , etc.)

Oh, I see! I misunderstood this line.... First, I have Riku out, a creature worth mimicking, to mean that Riku is a creature worth copying, not that you control another creature worth copying! Okay, I'm gonna read over this a couple more times to think about it, but I believe your idea will work.

Currently control: Riku Of Two ReflectionsMagmatic Force

Cast Progenitor Mimic copying Magmatic Force, when it enters copy it with Riku's ability.

Now have a Magmatic Force with "At the beginning of your upkeep, if this creature isn't a token, put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of this creature." and a token copy of that.

Flick the Progenitor Mimic copy with Ghostly Flicker, now copying the token, and create a token copy with Riku.

Now have a Magmatic Force with two instances of "At the beginning of your upkeep, if this creature isn't a token, put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of this creature." and a token copy of that.

Flick the Progenitor Mimic with another Ghostly Flicker, now copying the newest token with Riku.

Now have a Magmatic Force with three instances of "At the beginning of your upkeep, if this creature isn't a token, put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of this creature." and a token copy of that.

Repeat.....

Only issue is that he wants this for EDH. So if you have enough mana, or can pull off an infinite mana trick, you can essentially create infinitely many copies of a creature (suggest Warstorm Surge or other similar effects). So something like Deadeye Navigator or whatever else. I'm too tired to look up any others.

Okay, so the combo works but the token-spawning triggers don't stack up quite as fast as I thought. Thanks.
