Mutilate and mana pool...

Asked by Glaspo 12 years ago

Say I have 1x swamp, 2x island, and a Dimir Keyrune and i want to cast Mutilate so I use the dimir keyrune for a black mana....how many -1/-1's will each creature get? 1 because i only have 1 swamp? or does the black mana from the keyrune count as a swamp for the turn?

A Swamp is referring only to the land type. Swamps produce black mana. Black mana coming from another source does not count a swamp.

Some lands, such as Overgrown Tomb will count as a swamp (as listed in their card type) without being a card named swamp. But the only type of card Dimir Keyrune is would be artifact (and sometimes a Horror creature), but never a swamp.

Creatures would get -1/-1.

The mana you add to your pool is just mana. It doesn't confer any information about its source. Swamp is a basic land type that is represented by a card named Swamp or any other card that's types include the word Swamp (like Watery Grave ). Mutilate only counts how many of these permanents you control at the time of resolution. In your case, Mutilate would give all creatures only -1/-1, because you control only one swamp. Dimir Keyrune is an artifact with no other types.

In the middle of the card, below the art is a card's type and subtypes. "Swamp" is a kind of land subtype, like Elfs or Zombies for creatures. A card only has a certain subtype if it's on the card, so Blood Crypt counts as both a Swamp and a Mountain, but Dragonskull Summit is neither. Certain other cards can change lands subtypes, Contaminated Ground for example.

So in your above example you only have 1 land with the subtype Swamp, so Mutilate will do -1/-1.
