Is an Eldrazi and a Eldrazi spawn the same creature type?

Asked by sirtrojan 11 years ago

Creature types that are similar but not exactly the same, are they still technically the same? for instance an Eldrazi and an Eldrazi spawn, or A vampire and a Vampire Knight?

im assuming it is the same and the second wording would be its sub-type

You need to look at it from a different perspecitive. Each word after the dash counts as a sepatarate creature type. So, Blood Artist is only a Vampire, but Vampire Nighthawk is a Vampire and also a Shaman. These two creature types are on the same level. If a card says something like "if you control a Vampire", it doesn't matter whether that Vampire is also something else. The requirement is satisfied by that creature's having Vampire among its creature types. If something says "that shares a creature type", that requirement is also satisfied by just one of those words being the same.

It would help if you could describe the situation you were in, so that we can better understand what aspect of this topic you need clarified.

Yes, and No. Eldrazi Spawn counts as 2 creature types (Eldrazi and Spawn), the same as Vampire Knight.

So for example u have Bloodthrone Vampire and Arrogant Bloodlord in ur hand, and u play Cavern of Souls choosing creature type: Vampire. That means both ur spells can't be countered. But if u play Cavern of Souls choosing creature type : Knight, that means only the Arrogant Bloodlord is uncounterable, and Bloodthrone Vampire can still be countered.

Absinthman Wasn't a situation, more of a general question about the game. You verified my hypothesis though thanks. I guess a situation would be if i had 2 Eldrazi Spawn creature Tokens out on the battle field and i cast Cryptic Gateway , I would be able to cast any 2 Eldrazi for the price of two tapped creatures. For instance Emrakul, the Aeons Torn or It That Betrays

Yes. You can tap two Eldrazi Spawns to bring Emrakul to the battlefield. However, note that the Gateway doesn't allow you do cast creatures from your hand. You put them directly onto the battlefield, which is not equal to casting. If you are hoping to get an extra turn this way, it won't work.
