what happens if you exile a commander?

you may choose to move it to a command zone unless the card (HinderMTG Card: Hinder for example) states otherwise.

903.11. If a commander would be put into its owner's graveyard from anywhere, that player may put it into the command zone instead.

903.12. If a commander would be put into the exile zone from anywhere, its owner may put it into the command zone instead.

Note that those effects that bcurran are replacement effects. That means that using one of them will not trigger other effects based on a creature entering that zone. It will still trigger 'Leaves the Battlefield' effect though (Yukora, the PrisonerMTG Card: Yukora, the Prisoner).

For example, effects that trigger when a creature dies (goes to the graveyard). Using Child of AlaraMTG Card: Child of Alara as a commander will mean that you can either send it to your command zone when it dies OR let it hit your graveyard and wipe the field, not both.

The same for things that track objects after sending them away. If an opponent Oblivion RingMTG Card: Oblivion Rings your commander, you still can pick which zone it goes to (command or exile), but if you pick the command zone you won't get it back if you NaturalizeMTG Card: Naturalize the O-Ring.

This is why Spell CrumpleMTG Card: Spell Crumple is a really mean thing to do to an opponent's commander.

And why Cellar DoorMTG Card: Cellar Door is considered for some people just to stop their commanders from being Crumple'd.

Spell CrumpleMTG Card: Spell Crumple is mean. A followed Tunnel VisionMTG Card: Tunnel Vision is Evil.
