How strong can Tarmogoyf get?

Asked by CpyNPrnt 11 years ago

Without any boosts from other effects, 8/9 if I calculated correctly? Any help would be great!

Technically he can be 11/12 at his largest but you would have to be playing all the multi-player game types to get there

Here's the type ruling off of the mtg wiki.

7/1/2013 The card types are artifact, creature, enchantment, instant, land, phenomenon, plane, planeswalker, scheme, sorcery, tribal, and vanguard

So yeah 8/9 would be the biggest in a modern match.

There are instants, sorceries, lands, creatures, planeswalkers, enchantments and artifacts, so I think it is just a 7/8. "Mana Source", and "Interrupt" are considered instants for this.

Tribal counts as well. So in a normal game, it can reach an 8/9. Stuff like this is easily answered by going to the Gatherer.

Phenomenons, planes, and schemes can never hit the graveyard. No matter what format you're playing in, 8/9 is the largest it will ever get.

The Gatherer states that they do count. Follow the link.

ItchiUchiha117: While those are card types, they do not count no matter what. They cannot ever exist in the graveyard, regardless of if they have card types.

Honestly though, who the heck is gonna play a Tarmogoyf in a casual game with Planes and Archenemy Schemes etc.? For 3 more mana, especially if it's a casual format, most people will be playing Lord of Extinction . I mean, look at the price difference Tarmogoyf is roughly $115 and Lord of Extinction is around $7 or $8. In my opinion, Tarmogoyf is a competitive card.

Skyfolk - I've often wondered why they bother to include those in the ruling. Seems to me that it just confuses new players. Not that most new players will typically be using Tarmogoyf , but hey.

Because they are card types, but they only exist in the command zone. It's a pretty simple ruling, they're just like Emblems in that way.
