How often do ban lists come out?

How often do the different formats have bans? I was thinking about consecrated sphinx might be a poor investment right now.
At the moment, banlists for Wizards sanctioned formats update the Monday following the prerelease of a new set. It used to happen every 3 months on the 20th of that month.
The most recent changes to banlists happened in April following the Shadows over Innistrad prerelease, and brought in the following changes:
Modern: Eye of Ugin banned, Ancestral Vision and Sword of the Meek unbanned
Vintage: Lodestone Golem restricted (maximum 1 allowed in a decklist)
While we may go a couple sets without a banlist update, any changes are announced after a new set is released. For example, the last time Legacy got a banlist update was nearly a year ago in September when Dig Through Time was banned and Black Vise was unbanned.

Consecrated Sphinx.
He's a great card, and not hardly a bannable offense. He's not that overpowered, just amazing card advantage.
To answer, updates come out every 4-6 months I think, from what I've seen on The Commander website
As for other formats, I don't know because I don't play them, but I can assume it's roughly the same timeframe.
