How Many +1/+1 counters do i get
Asked by The_Overlord_666 6 years ago
Here is what is on my Board at the moment i have Doubling Season, Primal Vigor, Hardened Scales, and Corpsejack Menace, along with Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker. One of my opponents casts a spell (ex Opt). how do the above mention cards react to Ishai's counter and what order should i put them in to get the most +1/+1 counters?
Since you controll all the triggers, you get to place them in any order. You'll want to put Hardened Scales on the stack last, so that it resolves first and adds one counter to Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker's counter. Then the rest of the abilities will double the count in turn, for a total of 16 as Madcookie said. The number will be less if Hardened Scales resolves anywhere else in the order.

The only trigger is from Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker. The other effects are replacement effects, not triggers, as otherwise they would invoke themselves. As such they do not use the stack and the order they apply does not relate to their controller. Rather, they are applied in an order determined by the controller of the affected creature. The practical implication of this is that you get to choose the order all of the effects get applied in, even if it was your opponent who controlled the Primal Vigor.

All of those above are replacement effects that are activated by Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker's ability. You can order them in any way you like but for maximum counters the order is this:
[1counter (ojutai) + 1 counter (scales)] * 2(from doubling) * 2(from primal vigor) * 2(from the menace) resulting in ((((1+1) * 2) * 2) * 2) or 16 total counters. If you were to place Hardened Scales last it would look like this (((1 * 2) * 2) * 2)+1(from scales) and net you only 9 counters.
Disclaimer: I'm bad at math. (:P)
