How does Horde of Notions ability interact with the stack?

Asked by JoltsOfEnergy 6 years ago

Horde of Notions ability lets me "play" an elemental card from my graveyard. So the question is, do I technically cast them or not?For instance how would it interact with Door of Destinies (choosing elemental)?Does Maelstrom Wanderer's cascade effects trigger?Does it trigger my opponent's cards, such ass Rhystic Study.I really need to know this for sure, as this will definitely be a discussion. Thanks in advance.

"Play" = "Cast" if the played unless the played card is a land. If it is, it is only "play." All effects that interact with casting spells interact with Horde of Notions activations targeting nonland cards.

Conspiracy set to Elemental will let you play Dryad Arbor from your graveyard. This does not count as casting a spell, it counts as playing a land.

To play a card means to put a land onto the battlefield as a land drop for the turn or to cast it as a spell. As no elemental lands currently exist (though you could finagle the situation if you really wanted), you'll probably be casting the card as a spell, which will trigger Door of Destinies, cascade and Rhystic Study.

ok, great so that clears that up. So if I understand it correctly it correlates with the stack in the following way. I activate horde of notions ability targeting an elemental card in the grave, the ability goes on the stack, it resolves, then the card I targeted goes onto the stack?Does this mean I can use his ability at instant speed btw? or only if the card I target has flash?

You can play things at instant speed when you use the ability.

Think of it like this: The rules tell you when you MAY cast things - Creatures without flash MAY be cast on your turn. Cards like Horde of Nations that allow you to cast creatures also tell you when you MAY cast those creatures - in this case, when that particular ability resolves.

The spell actually goes on the stack as Horde of Notions' ability is resolving, so it already violates sorcery speed restrictions even if you activate the ability only any time you could cast a sorcery. If an effect is restricting you to cast spells only any time you could cast a sorcery, you will not be able to cast any spells using Horde of Notions. If no such restriction is being placed on you, the ability will let you cast any Elemental spell at instant speed. The balance to this is that flashing in a Maelstrom Wanderer is a lot less of a surprise when it's in your graveyard and you control Horde of Notions, because all the cards are completely revealed to all players, except the ones you cascade into, which are hidden even from you.
