Card Interaction Question
Asked by NPElemental 2 years ago
I was just wondering if a card transformed into Thing in the Ice Flip would it automatically transform/flip upon it changing; specifically Protean Thaumaturge ??
" Removing all ice counters from Thing in the Ice some other way will not cause it to transform. You’ll need to cast an instant or sorcery spell and cause its last ability to trigger."

In the future, this sort of question can go in the "Rules Q&A" at the top of the page (or in the drop-down list from the three lines on mobile). Thanks!

This wouldn’t work how you want it too anyways, as copy of creatures cannot transform.
701.25a Only permanents represented by double-faced cards can transform. (See rule 711, "Double-Faced Cards.") If a spell or ability instructs a player to transform any permanent that isn't represented by a double-faced card, nothing happens.
You only copy the side of the permanent that’s face up. You don’t copy both sides. So when it would “transform,” quite literally nothing would happen.

If you did have a double face card, like Delver of Secrets Flip, copying Thing in the Ice Flip (sutch as by enchanting with Metamorphic Alteration ) then when you cast an instant or sorcery it will transform. This will result in an Insectile Aberration copying Thing in the Ice Flip, so it will transform back then next time you cast an instant or sorcery. The reason is because your copying Thing in the Ice Flip, not the whole card, so you'll never be copying Awoken Horror .

You would still need to cast a single Instant or Sorcery to trigger it's ability..
