can i play two different versions of a character?

Asked by OSparklyWahn 14 years ago

I understand the legend rule and the Planeswalker rule fully. That is not my question. The Planeswalker rule had me thinking, can I play two different versions of the same character? For example, Glissa, Sunseeker and Glissa the Traitor or Ashilng the Pilgrim and Ashling the Extinguisher. They technically don't have the same namem but have the Legendary supertype and, effectively are the same characters. Help!

Yes you can have both Glissa Sunseeker and Glissa, the Traitor on the field because they don't have the same name. That's all that matters with legendary permanents, the name of the card.

That is one of the reasons the Legend Rule is different from the Planeswalker rule. You can have different variations (like the ones above) of the same Legend, but Planeswalkers are more unique and special only one based on the character.

704.5k If two or more legendary permanents with the same name are on the battlefield, all are put into their owners graveyards. This is called the legend rule. If only one of those permanents is legendary, this rule doesnt apply

The legendary rule isn't the same as for planeswalkers. It means they can't have the exact same name. For example it would be ok to have Akroma, Angel of Wrath and Akroma, Angel of Fury on the field at the same time. The legendary rule simply means two cards can't have the exact same name. It'd be fine to have out both different Glissas or both different Ashlings.

Like Tezz and sanixon94 said, the key to your question is in why it's two separate rules for the two (as opposed to them just saying that the Legend Rule applies to PWs as well):

  • Legend Rule cares only about the name at the top of the card, nothing else.

  • PW rule cares only about the subtype after "Planeswalker - " nothing else.

So, because the Legend Rule only cares about name, and two cards can't ever have the same name, within the confines of the rules they don't have a way to stop multiple versions of the same character from existing on the field. (Like Glissa and Glissa or Akroma and Akroma.)

@sanixon94 having both akroma's on the field, while it is legal, THAT WOULD NOT BE OKAY i mean if i was playing a game and my opponent had both akroma's on the field i would be scared as sht and shtless at the same time.

it's like having two emrakul's on the field with a Mirror Gallery . can anyone else say instant scoop?

hold on, so i get it with legends, but planeswalkers are different? so i could not have jace, the mind sculptor and Jace Beleren both on the field at once?

Exactly. Glissa and Glissa is legal, Jace and Jace is not.

They didn't want players abusing PWs by having multiple copies out at once. However, because these guys were going to be ongoing characters that they knew they'd want to develop and print "later versions" of, they also wanted a way to make their identities as characters be observable by the rules.

So, they realized that because a PW doesn't need any of the other information normally found in a card's type line, they could key in on that for PWs, and put the character's name as the subtype. That way, they can do things like the Jaces or Chandra Nalaar /Chandra Ablaze to represent different points in that character's life, and they could make sure the flavor - and power - stays intact by preventing you from using multiple copies.

But you can have both versions of Nicol Bolas in play and as user:crazykillsftw, that just isn't kosher
