Boosting artifact count for Hellkite Tyrant with Liquimetal Coating, and artifact man-lands
Asked by Named_Tawyny 10 years ago
Hello:
Just wondering if there's any way to get 'until end of turn' effects to happen before the start up upkeep?
As far as I can remember, there's no priority before the upkeep step, but I'm unsure if there's something I'm missing.

That's what I thought. Thanks.
And there's no easily accessible way to get a second upkeep phase, yes?

Having a Mycosynth Lattice down could help you with that. Getting both out doesn't seem too difficult, especially if you have a playset (of both) while running Urzatron.

Playsets are tough in EDH. ;)
But yes, while Mycosynth Lattice would indeed make my lands into artifacts, it would do that just as well for a Mountain as it would for an artifact man-land, like Mishra's Factory. ;)
Thanks for the suggestion.

Wouldn't Hellkite Tyrant's win condition be a triggered ability? You aren't able to use something like Thran Forge before it resolves, while it's on the stack, to boost your artifact count?

@nobu_the_bard: The essential problem is that Hellkite Tyrant's ability is written with what's called an "intervening 'if' clause". This means it checks the condition - "if you control twenty or more artifacts" - both at the time it would trigger and at the time it would start resolving. If the condition isn't true at the time it would trigger then it doesn't trigger at all, and there's no opportunity to make a response to it.

Ah okay, thanks for explaining Rhadamanthus! :)

You're not missing anything. There's no way to take actions in the turn before the Upkeep step, as it is the first time in the turn players receive priority.
