Belbe's Portal + Legend

Asked by TsaboTavoc 1 year ago

Can I assign "Legend" to Belbe's Portal to then play legendary creatures from my hand, e.g. Maraxus of Keld only has the type "Summon Legend". This makes sense in my head but seems like it might be misconstruing a card meant to be used to put tribal creatures onto the field.

No, the creature type Legend has been completely replaced by the supertype Legendary. Maraxus of Keld's typeline is Legendary Creature - Human Warrior, so in this example, naming Human or Warrior with Belbe's Portal would let you put down Maraxus. "Summon" is an old name for creature cards.

I guess my followup would be, how do I know what type of creature Maraxus of Keld is? I can look at him and, ya he looks like a Human Warrior, but he's also shirtless, could he not be a Human Barbarian? And Tsabo Tavoc is a Creature - Legend with no other types given.

The most current and correct wording of any card is the Oracle text, and can be found on this site. If you click the card image and go to the card page, scroll down a little bit and you'll see the card name, typeline, and up-to-date rules text. You can also use databases like Gatherer (which is the official WotC one), Scryfall (which is my favorite), and others. They should all have the current Oracle text when you search by the card's name.

OK thank you. More than a few things have changed since I last played this game. I found a post from Mark Rosewater that relates to this, and no surprise is from 2011, around the set Belbe's Portal was in.

Just to ensure you're fully caught up, a good chunk of the rules regarding the legendary supertype have changed since that article came out. The biggest one is that while one person still can't control two copies of the same legendary permanent, each different player can, so you and your opponent can each have a Tsabo Tavoc, for example.

(If you knew that already, then that alone will cover most potential interactions.)

Yep, I found that out at Friday Night Magic last week. Clone doesn't act as legendary removal anymore. Mana burn's not a thing... umm what else? Interrupts aren't "faster" than instants, I was told. Lots of new mechanics. Appreciate you taking time to explain rules/interactions.

Glad to help! There are a lot of knowledgeable people around here, so please ask any questions you come up with.

Everything that used to be a mana source or interrupt is now simply an instant.

If you want to bring back mana burn, check out Yurlok of Scorch Thrash (but outside of casual play, it's only legal in Eternal official formats, like Commander, Legacy, and Vintage.)

And the mechanics... Yeah, there's a lot...

Oooh, would you look at that, he works with Overabundance. I'll have to keep an eye out for Yurlok of Scorch Thrash then, thanks for the hot tip!
