Polukranos VS Desecration Demon in Midrange

Standard forum

Without stating my own thoughts, how does everyone else feel about using either creature in a Junk Midrange deck as a 2x in the 4CMC slot or do you find something else more useful?

Since Junk decks can vary a lot, what I'm working on now is under my profile, It's still a big work in progress.

Desecration Demon vs Polukranos, World Eater

I'd also like to politely add a side note that I am not asking for any other advice/comments/suggestions/+1s or anything for my deck, just a discussion on the topic.

It really depends on the deck, and what you're working with. In Junk, since you have access to so much spot removal, I think Polukranos, World Eater might be better. You don't really have access to any other wraths, so his monstrosity can be really useful. But if you aren't running any ramp or anything, he can be a real mana sink that's difficult to take full advantage of. Desecration Demon , in my opinion, is a great stand alone card. I just think he might be a tad slower if you have enough mana to throw into Poly.

I would use Reaper of the Wilds , it has a decent body, and gain either deathtouch or hexproof on command, which is a very powerful combination of abilities. And you get to scry.

You have access to all the removal you could ever dream of. This makes Polus ability useless. Desecration Demon will beat the other two in a fight and pushes damage through easier due to flying.

Hard to push damage through if it's tapped. You can go the desi demon route, but your deck has to be able to control the field very well.

Controlling the field is easy in BG. Desi demon thrives in this meta due to the lack of token production and the fact that aggro isn't in (yet). When aggro does make a big appearance then I feel like it will definitely be weak, in which case Polu might be better due to its ability to deal damage to a large number of enemies when it goes monstrous.

I'm currently running B/G midrange deck that runs both 2x Polukranos, World Eater and 2x Desecration Demon along with 3x Reaper of the Wilds . With the ramp provided by Elvish Mystic and the ramp and fixing Sylvan Caryatid provides, it's actually pretty easy to get either of those 3 on the board turn 3. I feel like the variety makes it difficult for my opponent to be prepared for whats coming, and it also gives me multiple large threats that have to be dealt with. So, without seeing the decklist and knowing how full your 4 drops already are, I would suggest finding a way to fit in both as they both have their weaknesses and strengths.

In order to pick just one it's really tough because which is better for you will really depend on your deck. If it's closer to the mono Black shell with lots of removal and hand disruption with things like Thoughtseize then Desecration Demon would be a good way to go. If your running something heavier on the green side for the ramp and the beefy creatures, then Polukranos, World Eater might shine a little better in that kind of a deck since you can sink more mana into his monstrosity ability allowing you to get more out of it. It also will depend on your meta too. Like it was pointed out, if aggro is running rampant, then lots of times you'll find yourself in a situation where your opponent is just dropping down cheap creatures to sac to the demon and then swing through with everyone else. If elspeth sees a lot of play at your LGS then thats also not good for demons. Even if you run downfall. In these cases it's probably better to run Polukranos. Just figure out what situations you'll be in most often and that'll help you decide which is better to run, because without knowing the rest of your deck or how its supposed to function no one can say for certain which specifically would be best for you.

I can agree with a lot of things mentioned, I guess it'll come down to taking the deck out and playing.
