What's the most fun deck in modern you've played? Most boring?

I'm trying to make a budget deck for Modern, one that can be steadily upgraded into a tier deck. Comments on a previous post gave me some ideas, but I got one more question. What modern decks have bored you to death after playing them for a while, and which ones never get old to you, and WHY? I know fun and boring are relative, hence the WHY. I'm thinking of building either Burn, Merfolk, Eldrazi, or Blue-White control but don't want to build into a deck that I'll regret/get bored with.

Build aggro , fast-paced decks feels really good . you can look at my deck if you want:

The most fun deck lately to pilot has been Modern Dagger Burn, only because of the look on my opponent's faces when they see the combo go off.

Until I built that deck, I enjoyed Goblins and constructed Jimmy John Goblins for play at FNM.

For non-competitive play, I like Modern Maze's End where you race to assemble all the guildgates and stay alive.

My least favorite decks have all been deconstructed, but they have a general subtheme, they were slower and control oriented. I don't like combo decks that have little to no interaction with an opponent. When I play Infect, I win quickly and people get salty. I feel like I cross over from this as a game at that point.

Burn decks are the most fun. I get a really big laugh out of beating people who think I'm a scrub for playing burn. It is hilarious to hear them say stuff like "Anyone can play burn. A kid could pilot that deck." To which I will respond something smug like "Well I guess that means you must really suck." and then go turn in that win slip boi!

I do not like Company decks unless it is in Elves. I find them horrible stale and boring. You just durdle until you Company/Chord for some cheeky combo. #BANVizier of Remedies

I have a G/W aggro homebrew that is a ton of fun to play. It wins a lot of games and uses uncommon tech. People don't see it coming at all.

A few other fun decks. Ramp into some 1/1s Blossoms. This deck looses a lot but is fun as hell when it gets an explosive start.

Another one, super fun but looses a lot. Red Deck Wins.

As for most boring. A Rakdos Lilly Blood Moon control build. It locked games up and took forever to find its wincon.

I don't pilot Lantern Control but that is one boring deck. Some builds don't even have a wincon they just lock you out til you mill yourself.

The most fun modern deck I've played is 4-Color Bring to Light Scapeshift. I enjoy tight gameplay and I like to live and die by 1 or 2 plays. The deck offers many lines of play and requires planning ahead by a couple turn. The anticipation of topdecking a Scapeshift for the win is a feeling I've yet been able to find in other decks.

The most boring deck I've played in modern would have to be Ad Nauseam. I like interactive magic and Ad Nauseam doesn't interact what so ever. You have the same game plan every game and if your opponent disrupts you its almost gg.

I think you need to play an interactive control/midrange deck. Each game will be unique and will make you a better player. You'll be able to improve on threat assessment, when to attack/block, managing resources and how to gain every edge over your opponent. DISCLAIMER: Currently modern is in a weird state and interactive control/midrange strategies are at their worst. Linear decks are at their highest. Recently big mana decks such as Tron and r/g Scapeshift have become popular. Hopefully the meta shifts a bit and control decks can become a little better positioned.

Best of luck!

The most fun one is by far ProcEspers. In terms of most boring, probably Dredge - quite a fine package but it is the "either you get there or your opponent stops you" type of decks that are highly independant of what you do.

From my experience, Jeskai Flash is the most fun I've had. It can pull out wins out of nowhere with Snapcaster Mages, Lightning Bolts and Lightning Helixes and it really takes time to master. Burn is a personal favorite, always a great feeling to throw fire at people's faces.

The least fun I had so far was with MonoU Tron really. This was my first deck to get into the format, but the strategy's too linear and got me bored quickly.

In general, I find playing against uninteractive decks really boring. It's a game above all, you should be having fun, competition or not IMHO. Infect, Storm, Ad Nauseam and the likes, though they are challenging to pilot, are really boring to play against.

Here's my 2 cents! :)

I'm taking multiple things into account here, based on y'all's input.

  1. I like dealing damage, like StardustDragon11.

  2. I've played aggro and enjoyed it.

  3. I love big creatures too.

  4. I'm not too experienced playing control, but I like the idea of turning Magic into a glorified chess game.

  5. That said, I love interactive decks, as hwagner recommended, because I'm a huge commander player.

  6. I know for a fact that I dislike one-trick-pony/glass-cannon/do-this-or-you-lose decks, like antacidbrn and Boza. I'll definitely get bored with those; I need to have a couple ways to win.

With all that said, I've boiled it down to a few options:

  1. Get this competitive budget deck by SaffronOlive called Mono-White Emeria control, which can be upgraded into Azorius Titan/UW Control.

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/budget-magic-94-50-tix-modern-mono-white-emeria-control

  1. Build 8-Whack, which is rather cheap when built to its peak strength. I hear goblins are legacy-playable. Same goes for Burn.

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/budget-magic-66-21-tix-modern-8-whack-goblins

  1. Build Merfolk, which is also Legacy-playable.

  2. Build something with the colorless BFZ/OGW Eldrazi. I hear those aren't going anywhere and they're played in literally every format.

These options are all so good, but I need pros and cons of each. Also, if there's an archetype you KNOW fits all of my 1-6 criteria, by all means speak up.

I'm really starting to hate this SaffronOlive guy. He seems to just steal other people's decks and present them as his own. :/

I wouldn't build that Mono White Control list. It seems very bad in the current meta and even his youtube matches are very out dated. I love midrange but as pointed out before Midrange is horrible in the current meta. You would be better to just build Soul Sisters, which I believe is cheaper as a whole too considering Iconic Masters just reprinted the 2 most expensive pieces.

I think you should just brew up your own list (or a few) and then go on https://untap.in/ and test them out. You can figure out what you like and what works for you for free then spend the money to build it in paper.

The 8 Whack list I have that is actually quite good is Jimmy John Goblins, I like that it is cheap too, no need for fetch lands.

The most funny game I played was a deck based on bidding life that I have constructed. At first it seems that is an unformat deck but then you will realise, that I just use spells that are format-legal. Of course, fun means winning but also losing games. So if you also like to lose games but with a laugh in the faces of your mates, then try this:

Who bids more? Sold, to the man in the middle.

A second deck I brewed, which is very very funny:

What the..? Is that a Sheep? Come on man...

Don't try to upgrade your way into merfolk. That deck doesn't work like that at all - either you have all the core merfolk, and 4 Mutavault, and most importantly: a whole set of Aether Vials. Or you don't. And if you don't, you have a deck that's too fair to play well.

Burn upgrades well enough, from monored to naya. saffronolives monowhite blink also does well enough with upgrading - it plays fine in its budget form, and doesn't change its style in any fundamental way from the upgrade cards. 8whack... I don't know, but it feels like a one-trick pony (I've played a bit of kuldotha 8whack - fast, funny, but not much variation).
