im currently going through all my commons and uncommons so i can cut down on the number of cards i have because they are just taking up alot of room. Now what im wondering if its worth my time to keep a playset of commons from each set? I know that maybe card "X" might jump in value becasue card "Y" was printed in a new set and made some super combo, but i just dont feel like any that i own will meet that condition, but thats just me.

Generally commons and uncommons aren't worth speculating on anyway due to the large supply.

I would generally just keep any c/u that you think you might use at some point., recent examples would be Lightning Strike or Magma Spray .

Stuff like Remand , Path to Exile , Lightning Bolt , and Gitaxian Probe are worth holding onto. In other words, if the C or U sees, or can see, play in eternal formats, it's worth keeping.

I am glad I came across the post because I have being thinking the same thing. I guess I am curious how everyone knows what cards are played in modern, legacy, and other formats. Is there a website that lets everyone know what "low value" cards see a lot of play. When I was into standard, I always heard people talk about this card is played in modern, and that card is played in legacy. I never really asked them what resource they used to find this out. So anyone got any good ideas?

Exposure is the best resource, really.

I enjoy watching coverage over at mtgcoverage.com, and also just looking at top performing decklists (mtgtop8, tcgplayer, starcitygames, mtggoldfish) and reading primers. It helps if you're interested in getting into the formats. But unless you have a lot of older cards, it's not that likely you'll have modern/eternal format staples and not know it.

I do tend to look at the top performing decks, but one card never showed up in a deck and it is worth a little bit. I have 1x Hyena Umbra and would have never thought it be a $1.40 common......I know that is a diamond in the rough find, but I'd hate to throw out a common or uncommon that has a little value that I do not know about. Sigh

Hyena Umbra sees play in Bogles (GW Hexproof in modern).

Sometimes other cards might just be worth some larger than expected amount of money because it sees casual play (like random dragons, angels, demons, or just things with big flashy effects).

There are a lot of commons and uncommons that are just unplayable.

As a general rule, I keep C/U that's already played in any format from Standard to EDH, and I also keep cards that could potentially be playable (e.g. Khalni Gem ) on the offchance someone wants them or I feel like making a super casual EDH deck. If you suspect a card might be worth something, look it up on TCGplayer.

But there's no reason to keep any copies of something like Tireless Missionaries .
